[Mateo's cantina]

tarta, gus, and mateo discuss what should be done about suzy. gus thinks they should go and see if they can rescue her in san diego. then he gets an email saying, "your life insurance protects you and your family, not your perritas." then there are pictures of vero being tortured and suzy slain on her bed.

he gets really mad and determines to A) distance himself from vero in order to save her life B) go to san diego to find suzy's killer and c) get these bastards as quickly as possible.

tarta makes plane reservations for him and gus. mateo arranges for a friend to give them a firearm once in SD.

[Gus' house]

nenena is talking to gus' mom. GM is all, "i just can't figure out this whole cyntia thing. something doesn't make sense." nenena is all, "i have to be selfish. what's going on w/mateo? have you noticed? he's been distant since i returned from amsterdam. we haven't had sex ONE time. you know how men are. that means there's another woman. have you noticed anything? anything suspicious? come on, tell me."

GM is all guilty and vehemently denies seeing anything suspicious.

nenena decides to extract the information from mateo himself.

[mateo's cantina]

gus and tarta leave, mateo stays and dusts his liquor bottles. nenena walks in. she's pissed and snippy and demands to know whether she may have a second of his time.

then she demands to know, "what's going on? you've been so strange. do you remember the last time we made love? no, you don't, do you. well, i do. i remember how i had to practically beg you. i remember each one of your caresses. now, i need you to tell me what's going on."

mateo starts, "nenena, i have great affection for you--"

she interrupts, "oh, please. whenever someone says 'affection' they mean 'i'm not in love with you.' you don't love me, do you. you don't want to marry me. you're not going to marry me, is that it?"

mateo looks glum and shakes his head.

we're all relieved by this.

[chepe's office]

that random gov't official who's trying to shut down the brigade comes in and threatens chepe once again.

[hospital]

ines walks in with a huge bunch of flowers and asks to see cyntia robles. the nurse is all, "we don't have anyone by that name."

ricky martin is listening nearby and tells ines, "you're not allowed here." ines is all, "who are you? what are you talking about?" but he won't answer.

ines then overhears two nurses talking about a patient who was kidnapped and tortured. so, she knows cyntia must be there somewhere. she then bribes a few nurses to let her see cyntia.

ines dresses up as a nurse and walks into vero's room. she sees vero in the bed, all sleeping. no compassion. she then reads the medical charts and sees, "your name is veronica vega... so you even lied about that."

nancy then comes in and asks ines how vero is doing. "stable," comes the answer.

nancy then asks, "and what of the baby?"

ines says, "the baby?"

nancy says, "yes, the baby of my friend. didn't you know she's pregnant?"

ines' face contorts.

[antonio's house]

crazy shrink from tere's place comes in, escorted by refugio. oh yeah, antonio asked for that guy to come.

he says, "i know that you must know how to do general medicine, not just psych stuff, right? good, then you must know how to do abortions....."

END OF SHOW....

advances for wednesday:

gus renuncia a veronica.

chepe tells the brigade gus has betrayed them by keeping all the benitez money.

antonio threatens the shrink, forcing him to do an abortion on vero.

re the government official who's been threatening Chepe, and who Chepe originally brought Nancy back to scam before she got caught up doing stuff to help find Vero's kidnappers: the guy is some sort of cabinet secretary in the government (they address him as "Secretary"). if i recall correctly --i was a little distracted during this scene and the one prior in the Tac/Ops room-- what the secretary did this time was more than threaten Chepe.

the LAST time Suborned Secretary was at Chepe's, he tried to bully Chepe into telling him EVERYTHING about what the O-Team was doing and Chepe told him to get lost, because he only answers to the President.

THIS time SS showed up, he spent a lot of time gloating that Chepe now has to answer to HIM, and if Chepe doesn't believe him, he can call his pal the President and verify it. he also gloated a great deal about how he was going to bring down the O-Team. Chepe played it very cool and didn't give SS the satisfaction of watching him call the President to verify this or not but...

also, before SS could slither out, Nancy knocked and came in to Chepe's office. i can't remember whether she was in the meeting in the Tac/Ops room when Chepe got called out with a message that SS was there to see him or not, so it MIGHT have been a mistake on her part. but if she WAS in that meeting, then her coming in was deliberate on her part. regardless, she made it look like it was an accident. she looked confused and uncomfortable, and immediately effaced herself. so, an unfortunate spike in Chepe's play to expose SS for the scum he is, or a skillful thickening of the plot by Nancy?

SUMMARY - Wed 02 July 2003 Author: B. Date: 07-13-03 22:12 PDT

WEDNESDAY 02 JULY 2003

<Vero’s room>

Inés the Extremely Tiresome finds out that Gus is the father of Vero’s baby and, panicked, manages to escape from Nancy. Another thing to add to Vero’s growing “tab.”

<DIddy Dearest’s study>

Dr Slime warns DIddy Dearest that giving Vero something to make her abort might kill her. DD replies that Dr Slime will do it, for one reason (he smacks a wad of cash on the desk) or another (he pulls a gun on Dr Slime and points it at his head).

<AA Mateo’s cantina>

AA Mateo continues trying to soften the blow of the breakup with Auntie Ditz using all the usual excuses but Auntie Ditz isn’t letting him off the hook at all. She runs down all the lines, practically before he says them, then, her dignity and outrage intact, buys a bottle of tequila and stalks out.

<Vero observation room>

Nancy introduces herself to Dr Tries-to-have... and gets the lowdown on Vero’s condition: grave, but not without hope. Dr T-t-h... asks why Gus didn’t know about the pregnancy and is told that Vero was going to tell him when she got kidnapped. Dr T-t-h... signs Nancy up for DD’s Let’s Not Tell Gus Club (only he calls it the Let’s Let Vero Tell Gus Club).

<Dad’s gravesite>

Gus meets with Chepe in the cemetery at his father’s grave. Chepe wants to know what Gus is planning.

<hospital>

Inés the Extremely Tiresome, now in street clothes again, is just leaving the hospital when Esteban the Unstable arrives. She watches as Gabriel gives him a report and remembers seeing “Cíntia” kissing EtU in the club, and herself reminding “Cíntia” not to kiss club patrons. Plus, Memory-Inés adds, the guy gives her the creeps – he smells of cop to her. Memory-“Cíntia” laughs it off.

<gravesite>

Gus shows Chepe a printout of the e.mail he got from DD in his true self as Head Narco (as opposed to his disguise as a normal person) with the pictures of Vero and Suzy and explains that Suzy was the one who was helping him decode the files from the Narcos. Chepe clarifies that Suzy’s body hasn’t been found and suggests leaving the matter to the US authorities. Gus dismisses the abilities of the FBI, saying they won’t know how to proceed in a case like this one. “{The Narcos} are corralling you, Gus,” Chepe says. Gus says he knows, and he plans to get to “Sagitario.” Chepe points out they don’t know who “Sagitario” is, but Gus replies, “You don’t, but I do.”

<Vero observation room>

Esteban the Unstable approaches Nancy and asks her, in the resigned tone of one making a statement, whether she already knew that Vero had married Gus. Nancy confirms it anyway. EtU sadly comments on his lost relationship: He doesn’t know when he started to lose Vero, but if only he’d paid more attention he could have done something about it in time. Nancy gently replies that, in her opinion, sooner or later he and Vero would have broken up, regardless. It was already more of a habit between them anyway – an illusion. “Is that what you think, or what she told you?” he asks bitterly. Without waiting for Nancy to reply, he continues, saying maybe it was just habit for Vero, but for him it was love – and it still is. “I love her and I lost her, Nancy – and that’s something I will never be able to forgive.” Nancy leaves him alone, watching Vero, a hand longingly on the glass as if to touch her.

<graveside>

Gus tells Chepe that “Sagitario” is Frosted Blond Bad Guy (real name Ramiro Barrientos, but who cares?). Gus points out that they still don’t know anything about who is behind FBBG or have anything they can use against him. However, FBBG makes an “interesting point of departure” for Gus’ plan. Gus asks Chepe for his help – telling him he wants Chepe to do it outside of the O-Team, without the squad knowing about it. Chepe wryly asks if Gus has decided to believe in him and Gus replies frankly that he doesn’t know yet, but he does know he can’t handle this all alone. Also, Gus adds, he wants to keep Vero far far away from this whole situation, so she won’t be hurt again because of him. He will need Chepe’s help for that, too. Chepe points out that Vero won’t want to leave Gus alone. Gus acknowledges this, saying he has a plan for that as well: He’s going to make Vero hate him. And he’s going to make himself one of the Narcos. He’s going to go to work for FBBG in order to eventually work his way up to the top man. He crosses his arms and firmly tells Chepe he’s not thinking of a simple “infiltration,” but to become a full-blown member of the gang. He’s going to make Vero believe that all the time he spent with her was merely part of his plan so he could play his little tricks. Chepe looks grave, but doesn’t comment. Gus clarifies that Chepe knew Dad and asks if he’d respected him. Chepe replies “yes,” and “of course.” Gus tells him that’s why he asked Chepe to meet him, and asked for his help, in this particular location, in front of Dad’s grave. Chepe points out that he’s on a very tight leash and helping Gus will risk the future of the O-Team. Gus replies that he knows that, and that’s why he’s not asking for Chepe’s help as head of the O-Team but rather as a man. Chepe reluctantly agrees. Not wasting any time, Gus tells Chepe he’s going to go to San Diego to look for any clues as to where Suzy’s body is or who her killer might be. This could be the first step in their plan: Chepe can tell everyone Gus left the country, that he escaped with Benitez’s $30 million. Chepe sternly reminds Gus that his doing this means that all the police and the O-Team will be after him. And he will lose Vero’s love. “I’ve already lost it,” Gus replies. They shake on their deal.

<Vero’s room>

Gus softly enters and walks over to her bed. He gently strokes one shoulder and tells her she has to fight to live. Knowing she is alive is going to be his only happiness in the world, because the next time they see each other she’s only going to despise him. He is very sorry for what he’s going to do, but it’s for her well-being and because he loves her. With infinite sadness he repeats, “I love you. I think this is the last time I’m going to be able to say that to you.” He tells her over and over again that he loves her, he loves her with all his heart, and he only wants her to be well. Then he gently kisses her on the forehead before slipping out of the room again. He doesn’t take his eyes off her until after he’s left.

<Father Anselmo’s church>

DD is at church. Again. FA asks him what he’s doing there and DD tells FA Vero had an “accident,” and that she’s in a very serious condition. FA is horrified, and sincerely but coolly tells DD he’s sorry. Then, with no change in tone, he asks if DD had anything to do with what happened to Vero. DD doesn’t answer, just asks FA to help him pray. DD kneels in one of the pews. Watching him warily, and consideringly, FA enters a pew behind DD and also kneels.

<Mummy María’s>

Jailbait bursts into Tony the Brat’s room and asks him why he wasn’t at school. She tries to tease him into a better mood, but quickly becomes serious when TtB sits up and tells her, “My sister is dying in a hospital.”

<church>

I guess they’re done praying, tho they’re still kneeling. Father Anselmo asks DD if he feels better. DD crankily asks why he should. He again blames everything on God. He uses the story of Cain and Abel as proof, pointing out that Cain murdered Abel because God ordered him to. God decides if you are going to be a saint or a sinner, DD claims. What sense would “good” have if “bad” did not exist...? he asks, wearily sitting down in the pew again. FA isn’t distracted by semantics: “You were the one who hurt Vero,” he states – not accusingly, but inexorably. DD just gets up and thanks FA for keeping him company. He starts to leave, and FA stands and insists, accusingly this time: “Was it you?” Without his usual histrionics, DD simply turns and says, No. He turns back and resumes his martyred exit. FA asks DD’s retreating back why DD came to the church: Was it because he’s about to do something so horrible he came to pray for God’s forgiveness – or has he already done this terrible thing?? Was that why he wanted to pray? FA reminds DD that even horror has its limits: Cain repented of his crime. As DD is exiting, FA shouts after him to protect his daughter, and especially to protect her from himself.

<Mom’s>

Grandma frets that Gus that he hasn’t even called to tell them what’s going on with “Cíntia” – he knows how much she cares for “Cíntia” because of how much “Cíntia” cares for Gus. Mom doesn’t have any answers that satisfy Grandma. Fortunately for her, Gus arrives at this moment and reiterates that “Cíntia” is not going to return to Mexico City. At first Grandma doesn’t believe him, but when he convinces her she bawls him out for losing all the good women in his life. After she storms away, Gus tells Mom that he’s going to go to San Diego to tie up a few loose ends he left there. For a moment Mom is all happy thinking he’s going to stay there, but he tells her he’s only going to be there for a few days. He adds that he wants her to be happy, and wishes she would start to get on with her life.

<Vero observation room>

DD practically shoves a still-reluctant Dr Slime into the room. Looking at Vero, Dr Slime again begs DD to reconsider. He looks for a medical reason why they cannot go through with the abortion, pointing out (after looking at her chart) that she lost a great deal of blood and will not be able to withstand another hemorrhage, but DD is determined: The drug will not turn up in her blood, right? he asks. When Dr Slime confirms this, DD orders him to get on with it. Dr Slime very reluctantly gives in, but sops his conscience by firmly telling DD the consequences will be DD’s responsibility. DD is just so determined Vero won’t have Gus’ child that he is deaf to anything else. Dr Slime enters Vero’s room and prepares to inject the abortion drug.

<Mummy María’s>

Tony the Brat tells Jailbait that in truth he had always wished his sister didn’t exist, but hearing that she’s about to die really affected him. Jailbait asks if he really wants to meet his sister and when he says Yes, she tells him they’re going to the hospital in an “of course!” sort of tone. TtB hangs back, protesting that DD will kill him if he should find out, and Mummy María would as well. Jailbait has no time for this wimpy behaviour. She points out that Vero is TtB’s sister and they have no right to keep him from seeing her.

<Mom’s>

Auntie Ditz is drunk. She dumps the wedding dress and other wedding stuff on the kitchen table and sits down with her shot glass and bottle of tequila to consider it. Mom comes in and comments about Gus’ going to San Diego. Belatedly she notices the dress and the half-empty bottle of tequila on the table next to AD. AD breaks the news about the wedding being canceled. Mom looks unhappy, and uncomfortable.
