I've been thinking about his role in this story and have found a consoling quotation (actually, a series of quotes) that apply...
"All the lessons of history in four sentences:
• Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad with power.
• The mills of God grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly small.
• The bee fertilizes the flower it robs.
• When it is dark enough, you can see the stars."
— Charles A. Beard
The gods are definitely working on Antonio; he's clearly more and more insane. If I were Maria, I would be, to paraphrase another quote, "...afraid, be very afraid" of annoying him.
As for the mills... this is worth remembering when the story lines seem to bog down
