Chepe insists he's serious -- he wants to know if he had a nice funeral, so Gus spares a moment to snap that he doesn't know about the funeral because he couldn't go. then Gus reverts to the problems at hand, starting by filling us in on what Chepe already knows: We faked your death so as not to ruin the operation infiltrating FBBG and now it turns out that EeBI not only wants to lock FBBG up but to screw things up for me with him as well! Gus goes on to tell Chepe how EeBI had him taken in for interrogation and how they even suspect he had something to do with Chepe's death. Chepe states the obvious, that if EeBI does want capture FBBG and expose Gus as a police spy, then "the most Christian thing they could do is shoot you," (Gus), because it would be far kinder than what FBBG and his crew would do to you. and what FBBG and co. would do to Gus is what worries Chepe. Gus already knows perfectly well what they would do to him -- what worries him is what might happen to his family. Gus reiterates that they (meaning, he and Chepe) have to do something. Oh, and another thing: EeBI doubts you, Gus tells Chepe. He believes everything the papers say about you. Chepe is not surprised, since he taught EeBI to doubt everything and anyway, there's a lot of evidence against him. Chepe is interested to learn from the newspaper that he's apparently a rich man, for instance. he points out that EeBI knows he's got a huge responsiblity now and he has to be pretty worried about it. Chepe thinks he and Gus need to make that worry work for them. now that EeBI is in charge, one of the first things the Narcos are going to try to do is something they never succeeded at doing with Chepe: to suborn EeBI. And when they approach EeBI, Chepe concludes, we will know who our enemies are. Gus worries that the Narcos might actually be able to succeed with EeBI, but Chepe waves that off -- he is confident that EeBI won't allow himself to be corrupted (and to be fair, i have to agree with Chepe. EeBI is too full of himself to allow himself to be OBVIOUSLY suborned. now, if DD were to really put his mind to it, well... i'd guess that's at least one reason why DD pushed so hard to get EeBI named Comandante to start with: because he was confident he could manipulate EeBI and obviate the need --and the danger-- to suborn EeBI in a more obvious fashion). what worries Chepe more is the copy of the tape from "Escorpión." the only reason Chepe can think of for "Escorpión" having given it to Vero at all is because "Escorpión" knows she's a cop.

<Father Anselmo's church, after the funeral>

speaking of "Escorpión," DD approaches FA in the aisle of the church (Mummy María is standing right behind FA, her arms crossed and an "I don't believe your nerve!" angry look on her face). "¿Me... das tu bendición?" he asks FA in that mild tone he puts on in public. FA just looks at him for a moment with a not very nice half-smile on his face, then wordlessly turns and walks away, giving MM a chance to approach DD. and then we get the smackdown we've been longing to hear MM give him: "Antonio, tenemos que hablar. (DD, who had himself turned and started to walk in the opposite direction toward the church doors where Vero is standing with some of the O-Team, turns back and assumes a what-do-you-want-NOW? stance facing MM.) Te aprovechaste de mí cuando tenía quince años, Antonio. Te aprovechaste porque era una niña que estaba deslumbrada por ti, quizás enamorada --¿quién sabe?-- para meterme en tu cama. Me hiciste sentir súcia, traidora, y baja con todo lo que me obligaste hacer. Todos estos años he cargado con esa culpa, Antonio. Por eso he sido tan débil contigo: porque dentro de todo creí que me mereci ese trato. (DD yawns, right in her face. over his shoulder we can see Vero looking at them with a slightly worried look on her face. MM just ignores his rudeness and barrels on.) Me odiaba tanto que suponía que el infierno que estaba viviendo junto a ti era mi castigo y que era justo, que me lo merecia.

DD <levelly, in a bored, let's-get-this-over with tone>: Te perdono porque tú no sabes lo que dices, María.

MM <sharply, talking over him. she's got her arms crossed and she's not taking any more crap from him.>: Ay, ¡no me hagas el favor -- claro que sé lo que estoy diciendo! El miedo que tú me provocaste, y la vergüenza que tú me provocaste, fue lo que te permitió manejarme como se te diera la gana. Y lo supiste siempre y siempre te aprovechaste de mí. Me dejabas sola cada vez que se te pegaba la gana (Antonio surreptitiously casts a few glances behind him to see if Vero can hear this. she sees him looking and turns back to face away from them. when he sees that she doesn't seem to be listening, he looks back at MM as she continues without a pause.). Me hiciste sentir dolor, vergüenza, y frustración. Te burlaste de mis sentimientos, y los de mi hijo también. No sé... ¡no sé cómo no te denuncié cuando tuve la oportunidad de hacerlo! Finalmente era una niña en la cama de un imbécil.

DD <in an almost amiable, let's-be-fair tone, shaking his head slightly>: No... no eras más que una muerta de hambre... (he shrugs slightly.) ¿Quién te hubiera creido...?

MM <with a cynical chuckle>: Y tú eres un loco infeliz desgraciado. (he smiles and gives an equally cynical chuckle. after all, DD can appreciate it when someone stands up to him and tells him the truth, even if he doesn't always like it. plus, people might be watching them, and they can't be seen having a common ol' argument right there in public. he continues to smile broadly through this next bit, as if sharing her glee.) ¡¿Sabes el gusto que me da poder alejarte de mi vida...?! (DD makes sarcastic little gleeful sounds as well, as if mimicing MM.) ¡¡Soy tan feliz!

DD <cheerfully, but with a warning gleam in his eye>: Eso es todo lo que tenías que decirme?

MM <with a snort>: Tú fuiste mi peor pesadilla, Antonio, y eso jamás te lo voy a poder perdonar. No entiendo... ¡no entiendo cómo alguna vez te podía querer (she contemptuously holds up her thumb and index finger, held about a hair's width apart) así!

DD <fed up and no longer interested in playing along. and once again, over his shoulder we can see Vero glancing back over her shoulder to see if MM and DD were still talking. seeing they are, she again turns back.>: ¿Sabes... sabe qué? Ya me hartaste. No tengo porque seguir eschucando esto---

MM <interrupting> No, sí tienes, sí tienes. Y me vas a eschuchar.

DD <slightly challenging>: A ver, díme...

MM <taking a deep breath and gathering her thoughts for a moment before continuing. she's smiling, enjoying this>: Me vales... ¡absolutamente nada, Antonio! (he smiles cynically again at this, back in the game again.) No sabes cómo te desprecio. (he achieves an even bigger, this time audible, yawn and casts another glance over his shoulder toward Vero. MM ignores this.). Lo unico que puedo sentir por ti, es lastima.

DD: Oye, ¿y qué vas a hacer ahora que estas sola, que el delincuente este (MM starts to laugh, cynically, and continues to laugh as he talks.) ya no se puede meter en tu cama, entre tus piernas...

MM: Lo de si Chepe es un delincuente no-- no tiene la menor importancia, Antonio. El caso es que la única vez que me he sentido mujer al lado de un hombre han sido esas dos horas que pasé con Chepe. (DD grins at her, and chuckles sardonically.) Lo que nunca sentí en mi vida!

DD <affably, still chuckling. he's not going to give her the satisfaction of letting on for an instant that this annoys him.>: ¡Que te aproveche!

MM <with gusto>: ¡Claro que sí! ¡No sabes cómo lo aproveché!

as the two continue to grin and chuckle falsely at each other, the camera cuts away to Vero, again looking over her shoulder at the two of them, still with a worried look on her face. there are two people, presumably fellow O-Teamers (none we've seen before that i can recall). the man is studiously not looking at anything (bad direction, that), while the woman, who has a direct line of sight toward MM and DD, is staring at them with an interested look on her face.

<O-Team commuications room>

Marcela the Undercover Hussy, who seems to be the only O-Teamer (besides Gus, if you count him as part of the team) who did not go to Chepe's funeral, is hard at work on the video of Chepe's assassination, specifically on the bits where the shooter can clearly be seen. she stares intently at the image on the screen, then does something to the computer to make the image rotate about 45 degrees so that the gun, instead of pointing down toward the lower left-hand corner of the screen, is now pointing at her lap, and the masked gunman is facing forward. (and i have a quibble here: even a digital camera is not going to be able to fill in the "blanks" with total accuracy and certainty on details of images that aren't captured on the original! the best that can be done is to make your best guess by extrapolating from the image that IS there. for instance, because of the angle of the picture, the details of anything on the far side of the gunman's hand and arm would NOT be part of the picture BECAUSE THEY WERE BLOCKED BY THE BITS THAT WERE FACING THE CAMERA, such as the inside of the shooter's arm and the gun. therefore, while we can GUESS that his sport coat probably has a button or three on the cuff, and that that wristband is probably the strap for a watch, we have no way of KNOWING for certain, in THAT shot, if his coat actually DID have buttons on the cuff (never mind how many or what they look like!), or what the face of the watch would have looked like, if, in fact, that actually was the wristband of a watch. the man could easily also have had a yellow stripe down the outside upper arm of his jacket because he accidentally leaned up against wet paint, or a big ol' tattoo on the back of his hand, and WE'D NEVER KNOW, because the camera angle was not such that these details could have been captured by the camera, at least, in that shot. yet the picture MtUH gets after she uses her computer to rotate the image magically has all the pertinent details --cuff buttons, wristwatch dial, lack of tatoos or scars on the back of the hand, etc-- clearly in place, with total acuracy, and without MtUH having to refer back and forth to other segments of the tape where that information might have been captured, so that --at the risk of giving away something from the end of the episode-- someone almost immediately recognizes the watch that the camera could not have seen. ARGH!!!). MtUH zeroes in on the gunman's masked face as Chino comes in to ask what she's doing. she explains that she's trying to get what little identifying information she can from the bit of face that's visible to them, and to extrapolate what the rest of the gunman's face might look like based on that. they both stare at the image on the screen.

<church>

DD levelly warns MM that she's going to pay for "this," but she looks as if she really doesn't care. she's got her hands on her hips, her head cocked, and is nodding in an 'Oh, really??' sort of way. And how are you going to make me pay, she asks. Are you going to do something even worse to me? Impossible!! You'd have to kill me. DD replies smoothly that he wouldn't do that, because he's not a killer (!!). he warns her it won't be easy for her to to get rid of him or the world that awaits her. and furthermore, he won't permit it. she disagrees, telling him he doesn't know what he's talking about -- he already permitted it. "Ya me quité ese peso que llevo desde que era una niña!" she informs him almost tauntingly. You don't know what I'm capable of, do you? Antonio suavely asks in return. Of course I know! she immediately replies, with exaggerated affability. "Eres capáz de seducir y de pervertir una niña. ¿Y sabes que? No me importa ni lo que digas, ni lo que hagas. Porque cómo ves: No te tengo ningún miedo, ni ningún respeto. Entiendelo: Ya no me sirves. No te necesito. (clearly wrapping things up.) Ojalá que, cuando menos le cumplas a Tony. Porque a pesar de todo ya a estas alturas es el único que todavía cree en tí. Ahí nos venos." and without waiting for a reply, she walks off. he doesn't try to stop her.

*Auntie Ditz's hospital room: Mom and AD discuss Reformed Inés' confession, and AD's fears about getting her bandages off.

*MM's: MM tells Tony (Ex-Brat) she told DD stuff she should have told him long ago and everything's over between them now; she's going to move.

*O-Team communications room: MtUH explains what she's doing to EeBI, and that even with the equpiment they have, she was unable to do anything with the tape of "Escorpión's" voice. she wants to speak with him about Gus.

*MM's: MM tells T(EB) she will let him stay on alone in Mexico City on one condition: that he talk to DD. T(EB) doesn't want to, but she insists, saying that DD loves him. plus, he offered to help T(EB) find a job -- that can be his pretext for going to see DD. Vero arrives for a chat with MM.

*office of the taller: Gus is also trying to 'decode' the "Escorpión" tape so he can hear the voice.

*Reformed Inés': Tarta supervises some moving men taking some boxes away. he and RI discuss her deception. she apologizes again.

*MM's: MM and Vero discuss MM's breakup with DD and the scene in the church. MM tells Vero she's going to move away, but T(EB) will stay. Vero will keep an eye on him. Gus calls Vero and says he needs to see her.

*Chepe's desecrated office: MtUH comes in and comments that EeBI's changed everything. EeBI is convinced he's seen the gunman before. MtUH tells EeBI that she shares his suspicions of Gus and is on his side.

*penthouse apartment: Vero arrives as Gus is still trying to decode the tape but he tells her he needs more sophisticated equipment. he tells Vero Chepe's theory that "Escorpión" knows she's a cop. this has already occurred to Vero, and she's not giving up on her mission to get him. but she promises to let Gus know if she finds out where "Escorpión" is. she agrees to spend the night with Gus.

*bar where T(EB) still works: Tramplet is there, still throwing herself at T(EB). her new plan is to suggest they look for work together. T(EB) deliberately mentions Jailbait. she kisses him briefly on the lips and someone (who may be Greasy Mustache, he's too far away for me to tell on my tv, at least) snaps a picture right at that moment.

*Tere's room in the sanitorium: DD goes to whine to Tere about how MM fell in love with his worst enemy and left him.

*safehouse / MM's: Chepe picks up his cel and calls MM, but then doesn't talk to her.

*Tere's room: more of DD's self-pitying whining. Tere doesn't say anything, but she does flinch away from him when he touches her. he asks her what it's like where she 'lives,' saying that he's really afraid that's where he's going to end up. and if so, he'd rather kill himself. she shuts her eyes and goes to sleep (or pretends to).

*penthouse: oh, look! those bronzey-satiny sheets are back!! Vero wakes alone in bed and goes out to find Gus, with headphones on, working on the tape again. but he still doesn't have the equipment to do it.

next morning

*AD's hospital room: Mom, FA, Tarta, Grandma, and MatAAo are visiting AD. she notices RI approach the nurse's desk then walk away when she sees everyone in the room. after some opposition from Grandma in particular, she sends MatAAo to invite RI to come to the room.

*FBBG's: FBBG bemoans the fact that Chepe is Public Enemy #1 and not him and gloats that none of Gus' dire predictions about what would happen for killing Chepe have come true. he wants Gus to transfer money into DD's accounts now, in front of him.

*communications room: Chino is working on the video now, going through it to try to identify potential witnesses (and why didn't they take names and addresses at the scene??? i only ask.). Vero comes in and asks what he's doing and he explains about the video, which Vero hadn't known about previously. he plays the whole video and shows her the thing MtUH did with the shot of the shooter. Vero stares, appalled.

*hospital: AD warns Grandma not to be rude when RI gets there. AD greets RI warmly, then kicks everyone else out for a few minutes so she and RI can talk alone.

*DD's study: DD is in a pissy, distracted mood. Brie shows T(EB) in to see him. T(EB) confesses that he's a bit nervous about staying on alone in the city and asks DD for his help. DD bawls him out and kicks him out of the house, telling him he never wants to see him again.

*FBBG's: Gus, reluctantly, transfers $5,000,000 into DD's account.

*communications room: Vero continues to stare at the enlarged, rotated image on the screen. she zeros in on the watch that the camera could NOT have seen and recognizes it as Gus'.

promos for Monday's episode have the O-Team continuing to try to get an idea of the face underneath the ski mask; EeBI apparently thinks he's figured it out ("¡Ya te descubrí, Maestro...!" tho we don't know specifically to what he is referring); while Vero has clearly followed Gus to or otherwise found out where the safehouse is. in full special ops gear she rapels down the side of the building, bursts dramatically through the window, and trains her gun on Gus, telling him she knows he's Chepe's killer as the voiceover trills, "¡y una desilusión puede ser el fín de una mentira...!" and let's hope so, because i'm so over this Gus has to lie to Vero / Vero has to lie to Gus thing. it's SOOOOOO tired.
