Auto-Inserted advertisements?....Subscribed forum donations..

December 17 2001 at 6:47 PM

A few days ago I read a post with football underlined. I thought "Hey, how did they do that?" I seen a few other underlined words that I passed off as "user-inserted." Until today, I read a post with Britney Spears underlined. I clicked on it and it offered me tickets to purchase along with other things. My question is: Is this Network54 doings and if so, does a subscribed account get rid of this?

I think we should see how many people would be willing to donate towards a Premier account at Network54. Pasquale has slightly brought up the topic before and I think it is an idea to look at. Lowest cost is $6/month and higher traffic sites can be as high as $18/month to outragiously $54/month but I think $6 would suffice. We could try out a month and later decide if we should purchase in bulk. What do you think?

I'm willing to donate a buck or 2 a month to Pasquale. Anyone else?

Darn Britney Spears ads...I do like her dances though.

Thanks for your support, Dream addict :))

I'm afraid it will come to $18 instead of $6 (darn it) Because of your post I went to look which category this forum is in, and it is just so popular that it is the medium one. We generate more than 20.000 pageviews a month. (which is the limit for the $6 )

So it will cost $18 a month. I didn't know that, i thought it was $6 for every forum.

Total Posts: 10,038   In December: 1,063   Yesterday: 62   Today: 30
Page Views: 366,989   In December: 35,180   Yesterday: 2,479   Today: 1,073

So, I hope that there are more who want to support the forum

They talk about banner free forum, but i hope they mean the underline ad things, as well as the ad-links below each post.

only slight problem is, that i have no idea how you can donate money technically speaking, because i'm in the netherlands, and you are every where else :)

Oh well.... Let this thread continue and let us see where it ends up.

Link insertion

December 17 2001, 8:28 PM

Those underlined words (link insertion) may be being done by something running on your own computer. In fact it probably is because it never happens to me. Certain "free" software that you download make their money by wrapping one of these link insertion programs with it.

A search would make the forum more useful, just not sure how much it's worth to me. Pasquale, maybe you could set up some kind of e-donations account? I'll see if I can find any info on it.

CH, you sure you don't see links in dream addict's post? i see them.. Are there more ppl who don't see them? I thought it was a N54 feature... Maybe when you use another browser or something? Or else the program must be very sneakily installed because i always pay really good attention to things who want to install stuff on my computer.

the e-account thing sounds great, i hope you find some info on it.

no links for me :)

December 17 2001, 8:56 PM

I tryed it with explorer and netscape... no links in addict's post.

I found one site with a list of people who setup e-donation accounts. Two problems, some seem to require you to be a registered charity(not all though I think) and I'm having trouble finding how everything is paid for .

Here's the site:

http://www.npower.org/resourcesandlinks/TechFundraising/E-DonationsEngines.htm

I'll plug away for awhile more on it.

strange...

Thanks CH, for searching

what OS do you have? Maybe it is only in Windows? I have the links only in n54 forums, nowhere else.

I've checked out your link - i was looking at sites like that too! I don't think i qualify for a charity

I've found this: http://www.paypal.com/ - you can send online money there, and it is in more than 37 countries. Only problem is that they take 2,3% +30 cents of every transaction, so that means the total of money needed is more than $18 a month. Also, everybody who wants to give money has to have an account there too (it's free, but it is a long form to fill out)

i'm on windows.

Only here, eh? Strange...

I've heard of paypal though hadn't heard that the customers had to sign up(?). Off that page I gave these two looked interesting:

http://www.4agoodcause.com/features.asp
http://www.contribute.com/what/index.html

I think they're all going to take a percentage (they ain't charities ). "4agoodcause" charges $10/month + % and "contribute" apparently just a %.

One must tread carefully with the online vipers.

Hello!

Some words are underlined as hyperlinks for me,
and I believe it's because I have installed Office XP.

Office XP has a small utility called smart-tags that
underlines some regular words in internet explorer, word, outlook and excel and creates hyperlinks
to other websites or applications that has to do with that specific word.

The reason some has them and some not has to do with,
a) You must have Office XP installed.
b) You must have a smarttag installed that recognice that specific word.

I believe that's the reason.

Cheers

not meaning to get technical

December 18 2001, 7:21 PM

After looking at the source code of pages that contain these links, I've concluded that it has something to do with XML. XML being the new HTML of the internet. AND a mix of JavaScript. These "link-insertions" only happens on this exact site from several of my machines. Yes, it is Network54 inserting these links. If your the lucky ones that do not see the links it may be due to many possibilities. Sometimes even in my browser, IE 5.00, they do not show. When that happens I ususally have a yellow exclamation sign in the bottom left corner of my browser window saying "Done, but with errors on page." If I double-click that sentence it gives me details of the error which is usually referring to some XML/JavaSript error. These ads/links are usually the last thing to come in on the page too. So if your a quick reader on a slow connection, you may not give it time to load the ads. Your browser version may not support the new XML/JavaScript calls. Security settings and such could disable this, at the loss of other helpful features though. BUT YES! It is Network54 and it is called "Contextual Ads" and even resides on their server at: www.network54.com/JavaScripts/contextual_ad.htc

So hopefully this clears some of the confusion of the ads....or adds some.. he he. Now we can concentrate on respones to donations. I would be willing to donate up to $3 US to try a month out. Sounds like Pay-Pal would be the best way to go, unless someone could recommend better. I would love to use the search feature at least for a short amount of time.

Oh and a response to XP

December 18 2001, 7:33 PM

Thanks for reminding me why I havn't upgraded my 486 computer. No, I don't have XP installed and my machine barely runs Win98. Makes no since. Faster machines and slower software, Jeesh! What a useless sounding feature, but I guess I shouldn't knock it before I try it.

Hmmm, I'll try something amusing to those that can see the links.

Fashion model Britney Spears likes to play football in her spare time after studying XML and JavaScript.

Hi, thanks for the compliment :))

DA, i noticed something, the underline yellow thing only shows up in recent posts! cuz on your top post they are all gone, and in your hilarious sentence they show (maybe they ran out of yellow stripes ;)))

(oh no after reload they are there again)

let's do a contest who can make the sentence with the most underlined words

I'm looking in the paypal thing, thanks for your support

annoying text

I did a little code analysis and found that if you are experiencing such a phenomenon, the problem originated with Searchboss.com, a ppc search engine. Apparently they use something akin to a trojan horse to get their claws into your pc. So if you downloaded some 'free' software, that may be why you see the pretty underlined words.

I'm sure searchboss pays n54 in some way, and perhaps other sites.
