I cannot call myself a friend of Trevor Ettinger. I really only met him a few times and never really on a truly personal level. But, you cannot help but feel an attachment for these young men that come to our community and play for the team that we cheer for.
Especially the ones with true class and character.
Trevor Ettinger was one of those players that you remember. Others had more talent. Some went farther in hockey. But Ettinger was a player - and a man - to be proud of.
He was the first Screaming Eagle to be drafted in the NHL and our first pick EVER in the QMJHL draft so he was signifcant in a statistical way.
But statistics are not what is the proper thing to talk about when talking about Trevor Ettinger.
Trevor was our first true "hero" when it came to the Eagles. This is a small community so it is never a secret who the truly nice guys are and who aren't. Trevor was one of those nice guys. He was also a frequent visitor in the community and helped sell this fledging hockey team when it so desperately needed selling.
I don't wish to ever suggest that I feel what his family does right now. But these players do find a place in our hearts. There are many of us that never forget some players. Trevor was one of those who you never forget.
I don't know why he did what he did - and really it is none of my business. What his family must be going through right now is pure living hell. Let's hope we never have to experience it. But, as I said, we grow an attachment to these young men that some to play in our town, so we too need to grieve, to come to grips with something like this.
Rest in peace Trevor - I hope you find the peace in death you obviously could not find in life. There are many sad today that you are no longer with us.
