Well ... not a huge day for me, but anyways, Happy Australia Day ppls!! And you can 'celebrate' with us too Lou .. if you like ... lol!!! (oh and your cricket boi is playing at the mcg today!)
But more so, I made this thread for this ... well, for the Young Australian of the Year ... yep ... for Lleyton!!!!

Young Australian of the Year 2003
Lleyton Hewitt

Lleyton Hewitt, at 21-years-of-age, has made an incredible mark on the world tennis stage. As the youngest ever player to be crowned World No. 1 in 2001 and by repeating that feat again in 2002, he has proved that true Australian grit and a never say die attitude can take you to the top - and keep you there.

Lleyton was born in Adelaide in 1981 and lives his life by a work ethic instilled in him by his parents Cherilyn and Glynn, both sportspeople. He began playing tennis on his parents court and by the age of five was travelling with his family to Melbourne to watch the Australian Open. At eight he was winning matches against much older opponents and by 12 his love of tennis was overtaking his daily life.

In 1998, after winning his first professional title in Adelaide at the age of 16 (a feat that had not been accomplished on Tour in ten years!), Lleyton decided that tennis was the life he wanted to pursue. He joined the ATP Tour full time and achieved victories over more experienced players such as Pete Sampras. In 1999, Lleyton made his Davis Cup debut in the United States alongside his hero Pat Rafter.

At 20 he became the youngest male player to win the U.S. Open (2001) since Pete Sampras over a decade earlier.

Few expected Lleyton to retain his No. 1 ranking last year after beginning it with the chickenpox. But with his close knit family and tennis-playing girlfriend Kim Clijsters behind him, he bounced back to be crowned the 2002 Wimbledon champion.

In November, with his No. 1 ranking still on the line, Lleyton showed that he was no 'caretaker No. 1' by winning the Tennis Masters Cup for the second consecutive year, joining an exclusive club as one of only seven players in the history of the ATP rankings to finish as the No. 1 player in the world two years running.

With his trademark back to front baseball cap, Lleyton is renowned for his mental toughness and gruelling training program.

Off court, Lleyton has a well-known love of Australian Rules Football and strongly supports his home team, the Adelaide Crows. More importantly, Lleyton became a global ambassador for Special Olympics in 2002 and continues to support national organization such as the McGuiness McDermott Foundation, the Bone Growth Foundation, and the Starlight Foundation.

At just 21-years-of-age, Lleyton Hewitt is a young man on a mission. His passion for tennis, his drive and determination to be the best and to prove to himself that he can succeed against all odds, should inspire all Australians.

Quotes for Use with Print Media

"I grew up in suburban Adelaide. My Dad was an Aussie Rules footballer and Mum was a state netballer and physical education teacher. We'd play just about any sport from table tennis to cricket in the backyard. Every year since I was seven, we'd make the road trip of more than 700 kilometres to Melbourne for the Australian Open. From an early age, tennis was my passion and I grew increasingly determined to play professionally."

"Success in the world of tennis has taken enormous focus and effort. It's what I've wanted for so long and I have seized every opportunity to achieve my ambition to be world number one."

"I spend a lot of time away from home on the international circuit. When I come home I realize just how lucky I was to be born in Adelaide and to call myself Australian. Playing Davis Cup gives me the opportunity to represent my country on a regular basis and this is an enormous honour."

"I love Australia and our way of life. I'm very proud to be named the Young Australian of the Year."

~ Congrats!

It was the day (Jan 26th) that some Captain dude pro-nounced NSW was a Colony. The landing of the first fleet.
Dad had radio on this morning and some guy was cracking it that so many peoples didn't know the significance of the day and why it is the date it is! LOL!!!
Yeh, lotsa barbie's and stuff. We used to have this majorly-extended family picnic ... but I don't go anymore - lol.
They cancelled all fireworkds here this year, due to the bushfires.
But have lotsa of goings ons at different places, esp in the city. Liek at Federation Square and stuff.
Honestly. I don't really get into it all ... but ... yeh.

Re: Re: Re: bout flags

January 30 2003, 4:49 AM

actually, when we were playing Brazil in the World Cup last year, LOADS of the 6th form came wearing England footy shirts, and LOL the head boy (who was just soooooooo full of himself it amused us like hell) HAD been wearing this Brazil top in the run up (and LOL instead of like a player's name on the back it said 'GENIUS' which just had me in stitches every time I saw it). But anyways, on the day of the match he became all patriotic and came with a big St Georges Cross flag thingy - wearing it like a cape. LOL. He looked like suuuuuuuuuuccchhhhhhhh a fool. And 2 other boys were wearing plastic bowler hats with the Union Jack on - LOL sooooo cute!! (damn, i miss that year group!)

And at the Queens Jubilee and stuff we got all patriotic and whatever, so I guess we're not too bad ourselves! hehehehe.

but it did make me laugh that Ego decided to change from Brazil to England on the day that Brazil beat us.... served him right. (Hehe, it also amused me that when he was in yr12 he was actually disturbingly cute - and by the time he left yr13 (and actually still now) he looks decidedly femine (and kinda half dead) lol)

AHUM... aannnyyywaaayyyy....

Oh oh, it amused me also that in New Zealand (I think it was) they celebrate 'New Years Day' and THEN (now this is CUNNING) the next day is entitled 'Day After New Years Day' and they celebrate that too!! LOL!!!!! Do you guys celebrate that special day too????? hehehehehehehe. I like that idea - you could have it all through the year "You are invited to my '283 Days After New Years Day' Party"

Barmy Army

January 30 2003, 3:56 PM

Oh that reminds me!
Some guy in the Barm Army at the cricket on Saturday, had an Aussie top on, official playing one (watever they call them in cricket - not guernsey!) ... anyways ... it was an Aussie on and on the back it had written "KNOB" ... and had 00 ... it was kinda funny ... cruel ... but funny. LOL!

hehehe

February 1 2003, 4:49 AM

ahhhhh, i just thought 'genius' was the funniest thing, coz he was SO UP HIMSELF that... well.... yeah. LOL. I was quite worried coz he was wearing it when I had an exam at the same time as him and all the ppl in his exam were sitting up on the stage with their backs to us, and we were in the hall... and if he'd been sitting where I could have SEEN it... omg i would not have been able to stop myself laughing! lol. (I had enough probs anyways coz one of the questions was 'at what did bobby sratch himself?' and well... my mind was visiting the gutter at the time.... lol) Also his (i'm sorry to admit) friend was doing the exam too... a guy that went by the name of Joe.... once had pinkish hair..... well, yeah, so it was definitely easy to concentrate in THAT exam!! LOL. (luckily i was finished like an hour early - it was a ridiculously long exam) and they left half an hour before us so i spent half an hour sitting there working out which one was him (he only had brown hair at the time) and the i worked out which was him - and I could only see a portion of his head from behind the big exam board thingy that was up on the front of the stage, and that was only if he sat in a certain way. lol.

can't remember where I was going with all this so I'll do the sensible thing and........
