I've gone a bit reading crazy in the past few weeks and NEED somewhere to post about stuff I've read - and hoping u guys might have stuff to recommend too!

First of all, speaking of recomendations, Bee MADE (lol) me hunt down and read a book called The Vodka Dialogues - which I did and to my surprise, found it was written by an Adelaidean AND set in Adelaide - which was quite strange. NOTHING is ever set in Adelaide - well that movie about solar car racing (Race The Sun) was but 'Adelaide' was actually filmed in Sydney..lol...but we South Aussies still got excited. But VERY odd to actually read about places I go to! And ppl sooo need to get over Big Star records - first the girl in the book goes there, and then Andrew G feels the need to mention it in his little diary thing - yes it rocks, but tis just a CD store lol! And I was like OMG when they named a drug ridden suburb...and it was actually a drug ridden suburb! Once I got over the excitement/weirdness of it all, I LOVED the book! Tis very cool (and not just coz of the title!) and I'm very pleased there is a sequel coming! So thank u miss Bee!

I then started reading a book called Rachel's Holiday by Irish writer Marian Keyes (who wrote Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married...a book and dodgy TV series I LOVE!) - and coz it's a bit of popular fiction, I was expecting it to be quite funny, but nothing special...but it's one of the best books I've ever read! It's about this girl who has a drug problem, and goes into rehab, but doesn't think she has a problem - but bit by bit, u see how the rehab and therapy are working. I've always looked for a book that depicted this in an honest and real way (due to good old family issues I have lol) and this book is brilliant! It also manages to be very funny too - and I love all the little irish words and phrases. It's about 600 pages long but I was sooo into it, I barely put it down and had it read in like 2 days lol (hmmmm no wonder I'm tired...) I thought even more about it when I read that the author is a former alcoholic (well not former, coz you're an alcoholic for life even when u don't drink...but couldn't think of a better term lol) - it's one of my fave books ever now.

And today I bought the Home and Away novel (U know how they've done another one of those "DVD only" eps - well last year's was shite so I REFUSED to buy it...so I bought the $8 novel version instead....and read it in like 40 mins or something...it's shite! NOTHING HAPPENS yet again!

Gotta find a new book now..

I'll just chatter to myself here...tis all good lol! Pity I hadn't done that a few mins ago though...just emailed the author of the book I love...poor woman's probably thinking FECK OFF! (coz she's Irish and obviously that's the only word they ever use..)

Anyways, just read another book by her (Marian Keyes btw) called Angels which wasn't bad but not as good as Rachel's Holiday - which it wouldn't have been, would it? Since I keep proclaiming that Rachel's Hollie is my fave book ever (or at least right up there with Catcher In The Rye, Looking For Alibrandi and Matilda!) But it's still quite good - and is about Rachel's sister, so Rachel gets a mention and I was very happy with how she's going (lol I get attached to book characters!) It's a bit dumb...coz this woman leaves her husband then has a fling with a woman...coz of course that's what ALWAYS happens when ppl get divorced...they have a bit of a lapse when remembering where exactly their sexuality lies, but it was funny and I ended up giving a toss what happened to poor old Maggie, so that has to mean it was good lol!

Ok, honestly, do I have "I AM DESPERATELY BORED! PLEASE EMAIL ME BACK" written at the end of my emails or something????

First Andrew G answers in record time, and now has been beaten by Mr Marian Keyes. Yes, I emailed that author and her husband - all the way over in Ireland - emailed me back in less than half an hour! LMAO!

I am reading the silliest book ever! Tis called 'How To Have a No.1 Hit Single (and what to do if you don't) and it's about this english TV journo called Jonathon Maitland, who decides to dedicate a year to getting his pretty crap band to No.1 - and write a book about it. VERY SILLY! The reason I bought it? It had this written on the back "I hope Maitland will be taking on ridiculous projects a la DAVE GORMAN for years to come" - I took that as a sign that I MUST read this book! (Plus that comment came from the author of Looking For Andrew McCarthy, one of my fave books ever!)

Can't remember if we've discussed this before, but have you read any of Tony Hawks' stuff?

His book One Hit Wonderland sounds a lot like that one you just read - except Tony just had to get a song into the Top 20 anywhere in the world. (He'd been in a band when he was younger that had a top 20 hit and was fed up of being called a one hit wonder) Ahhhhhh, such a funny book!

I loves the bit when him and his little group of people are doing kareoke, and (Sir) Tim Rice's son (I think he's called Donald or something. He looked rather handsome in the photos and sounded like such a cool guy in the book) was singing that "I will do anything for love" song... but lol coz the lyrics they were reading from had spelt "DON" instead of "DO" everytime. And so he was singing the words they'd written (for fun) and they were all in hysterics at the phrase "I will don anything for love, but i won't don that!!" lol!

Ahhh... good book! Good book!

Last Chance Saloon

November 24 2003, 10:15 PM

I've just finished a great book - another by Marian Keyes - called Last Chance Saloon. It's about 3 childhood best friends who grew up in hicksville, Ireland - moved on in life, but always had each other, until one of them gets cancer, and makes all of them look at their lives. It's sooo good - and it's actually funny too - which I thought was pretty impressive.

Great book!
