Press Release

Further to instructions issued earlier today, President Mwai Kibaki has directed:

1. The immediate resettlement of 6,802 former Internally Displaced Persons who are currently residing in 19 congested IDP camps across the country ahead of the El-Nino rains. The exercise will commence immediately and be finalized within the next two weeks.

2. The Ministry of Lands to identify suitable land and speed up the decongestion in farms purchased by former IDPs. The Minister for Finance should avail the necessary funds for acquisition of the land and payment of the integrated IDPs.

3. Provincial Administration and Internal security to transport and relocate IDPs to acquired lands in liaison with NYS, Military and other Government departments.

4. Provincial Administration and Internal Security to ensure no more camps are created by persons impersonating IDPs and take drastic action.

5. Provincial Administration and Internal Security to provide security and liaise with other departments to provide essential services and ensure logistical support.

6. The Ministry of Special Programmes to hasten the payment of the money for household support and reconstruction respectively to the integrated IDPs.

President Kibaki expressed concern over the deplorable living conditions of the IDPs in the camps. He expressed the Governments commitment to ensuring that the IDPs resume their normal lives and get fully integrated into the society as necessary infrastructure and social amenities are put in place in the new settlement areas.

The President said that the exercise should be carried out in a transparent and accountable manner by all those concerned.
