Topic: Rome Event Report
These events are held annually in one of the cities in Europe. Members pay for all the events cost. During the meeting members have a voluntary main speaker who motivate and educate the women on various subjects This year we had the pleasure of having a Motivational Speaker. The event was organized and planned by Joy Zenz, the founder of AWE with help from Wambui Njau an administrator on A.W.E. alt=""> Members arrived, and jointly met at designated hotel in Rome. Most or all members landed at Fiumicino (FCO) also known as Leonardo da Vinci airport on the afternoon of the 12th June with temp at Rome raising to the highs of 26- 27 degree Celsius. Few members took a train (Leonardo Express) which takes you from the airport to Termini for 11.00 Euro per person taking 30 minutes to the destination. The Hotel was located few minutes from Termini train station, so members found it easy to take a taxi to the hotel. Members who got to Rome early on Friday took an evening tour with a tour guide around the city. The guide showed and described the city and brought it to live. alt=""> On Friday evening was an introductory dinner in a restaurant nearby the hotel. Members gave a brief introduction about themselves. This was a very interesting time because most of us had not met before. The introductory session was accompanied by a light meal. Members had a laugh that evening, enjoying a relaxed atmosphere before retiring to bed. On the 13th of June, members woke up to an Italian breakfast and ready for the conference at approximately 08.00hrs. The master of ceremony was Wambui Njau A.W.E administrator. Mrs. Jane Karanja (Mrs. Seed) opened the meeting with a word of prayer. Joy Zenz A.W.E founder gave a brief introduction of the A.W.E group about its aims, objectives, achievement and goals set for the coming year. This was done by Joy Zenz. Later Nancy Gathecha a motivational Speaker, entrepreneur, CEO and founder of Zoe Gospel Enterprises took to stage to motivate women speech title "inspire women with a purpose. The session was so inspirational and refreshing. Members took part in workshop, activities as well as discussion. The idea behind the AWE trip to Roma was to network, meet, make new friends and encourage each other and these aims and objectives were met. alt=""> One of the comments from members about the conference: This trip and conference was a real eye opener for me. I made friends and had a very motivational talk. Ladies from Africa yes we can do it I will never shy again in my little cacoon and rot there with all the brilliant ideas. Thanks Joy. (Elizabeth Kangethe, UK) In the Afternoon of that day, after lunch, members took a tour with the help of a tour guide to the must see sights in Rome. It was hot with temperatures rising to the highs of 28- 29 degree Celsius. alt=""> Vatican City the worlds Smallest State, with a population of 800 members! Comment from one of the AWE members: I am not a saint but I have to say everybody was looking forward to visiting the Vatican city. I have to be honest, that my dreams were or all our childhood dreams were coming into reality. Weve all had heard about the Sistine Chapel St.Peters Church, the Pope and so forth but being there in real life was awesome. from (Josephine Maina) To enter the Vatican City you have to have a dress code. No short skirts, shorts or sleeveless tops allowed which explained why so many hawkers near the entrance selling long scarves. The museum entrance is located on the right hand side of St. Peters follow Via Di Porta Angelica from St. Peters. Our guided tour to the Vatican took at least three hours. The building had statues, breathtaking artworks in the ceiling with pure gold (Michelangelos ceiling), frescos, mosaic floors, the rays of lights that came through the windows created an almost divine effect (holy spirit shining on us), it was difficult to understand the size of the Vatican until we got in. The building was huge we all got dwarfed in it. said one of the members. The whole experience was overwhelming with a lot of Christian History to see and learn. Members were able to see the bodys of Pope and the remains of Saints of the bible buried in the area. AWE tour guide thrilled us with the history of this marvelous City. More comments from AWE members: Visit to the Vatican was wonderful (Elizabeth Kangethe UK), AWE tour guide was also very good and professional explaining the history of the Vatican City and what an amazing place!! (Wambui Njau UK). For members that did not go to the Vatican, a tour of other Roma attractions was enjoyed. One member attended a gay parade which she said was amazing as well. alt=""> After a very inspiring and hot afternoon, members came back to the hotel via metro train, took a quick shower, few minutes break and back to the streets again for a dinner. The whole idea of the dinner was to wind up the day and share a traditional Italian meal in a historical building and to listen to each others comments about Rome. The meal was a three course meal which was presented according to Italian cuisine. As the saying goes if you go to Rome do as the Romans do This is one of the main reason we had an event to learn about other cultures, the meal was very interesting to say the list. Risotto for Starters brought quite some excitement at the table! We also had a raffle organised by Wambui Njau and Joy Zenz for charitable causes. All the items were contributed by members of A.W.E. Among the items were African outfits, ornaments, books, African laces material and cash. The money will be used for the Maisha Self help group Nairobi. A.W.E group aim is to help African women to eradicate poverty. While having deserts we listened to each other on an open discussions about businesses, Christianity and personal talks before members dispatched to their respective Hotel rooms. alt=""> The last day of the trip started with a heavy Italian breakfast in the hotel restaurant, followed by a get together for AWE members to summarise the event. Joy Zenz took to the stage to thank all members for attending the conference and encouraged members to keep to the same spirit and encourage other African women in Europe. During the meeting members were given the opportunity to discuss what they learnt from the trip, suggestions on how the trip could be organized better and any other concerns were raised at this time. All points and suggestions raised which were quite constructive will be considered for the next trips. This included a suggestion of having a weekend away for Spa and Therapy Pampering tour! Members traveling back to their respective countries on Sunday evening had one more chance to tour the Colosseum the most famous monument in Rome. There were plenty of tasty Italian Ice Cream vans all over the site and as the temperatures continued to sore at 35C degrees. AWE members indulged to cool off while waiting for their time to go home. Thank you so much for organising the event, it was very successful and I loved the City of Rome. I also wish to take this time to thank you Nancy Gathecha for the motivational talk, it was very professional and very well delivered, it definitely gave me a lot to think about my dreams. Thank you Nancy. God bless you all (Wambui Njau UK), It was awesome and look forward to another one like this next year. Again it was meeting people in person, Joy, Nancy, Janet etc not forgetting my roommate Amotola (Mercy Njoroge UK), It was a pleasure to meet for the first time highly motivated women, this made it easy to organise the event. I am now more motivated to organise the next event in Paris France (Joy Zenz Germany). AWE group had an amazing stay in the Eternal City of Rome. The idea that women from all over Europe and with varying age ranging from 25 years to 60 years old came together and had a chance to meet and network together was a big achievement. Many thanks went to Joy Zenz who organized the whole trip. This was not an easy task but she made it with the help of Wambui Njau an Administrator of A.W.E living in UK. Many thanks to all A.W.E members who made it to the event. We hope to meet you again in PARIS, FRANCE!!!! TOGETHER WE ARE STRONG alt=""> Article compiled by AWE member Josephine Wanjiru, Joy Zenz and Wambui Njau
