Correct me if I'm wrong!
Kenyans should uphold democracy whether in Kenya or in Diaspora.
I thought the meeting on Saturday was to discuss what kind of sacco diaspora wanted, but I was disgusted to listen to speaker after speaker giving oversight on all the good reasons and advantages of a sacco and eventually drop a bombshell that a team of experts has been selected to head the sacco and to add an injury to the wound a set figure of £2600(Ksh. 327600) to be a member, which was announced after the vote of thanks.
1. Diaspora was not given an opportunity to elect their team
2. Picking the team of the so called experts wasn't convincing enough(sorry I became instantaneously sceptical about IT expert)
3. When an individual member will become eligible for a loan, who and how will they gather their guarantors being in dispersed all over diaspora?
These are among a number of issues that should have been discussed.
Kenyans have gone through quite a number of Goldenbergs and this shouldn't be diaspora based one.
Thanx mwalimu for pointing this coz I share the same sentiments. Myself I didn't attend the meeting but being an IT guru I heavily rely on the internet but after visiting their website, I was gobsmacked coz I guess the website itself was done by a trainee plus nothing has been put on website that is the objectives and goals and how this will be achieved.
Another thing is av come to realise any dreamer find it easy to sell his/her dream to people in diaspora coz they think we are gullible.
How can you tell people to form a group and you start charging hefty amount of money and people should have been given a chance to practice their democracy by voting the management after all it is their money.
People should be very careful when it comes to money...#JustAwarning!!
I do second your view & its the high time people woke up & opened their eyes. The whole thing is a good Idea but the idea that Leaders have already been selected without giving members/share holders the chance to chose their own Leaders & the prospective share holders just goes with it is worrying. Sacco is for the members & not for individuals. democracy should play a key part especialy when it comes to selecting the Leaders. i would understand it if the team was meant for a specified interim period which shouuld be spelt out, there is also the issue of the registration fee, which is questionable.
Looking at all your observations, I think most point are valid and its actually very encouraging to see Kenyans questioning things. However, I am not sure why people are disregarding the issue of iterim governance. Who would have been there to elect who without having members join first? I also dont like the fee as I cannot afford it, but I think these are issues members can vote on once the first AGM is held. All SACCOS as I know do have the pioneering group as interim officials until the first AGM is held. Listening to the speeches made on the day, it is malicious to tangle issues here. I think the high commissioner was there in his capacity for utumishi kwa wote, Nyaga in his capacity as the minister incharge of the ministry that regulates SACCOS, COop Bank as a financial institution that banks SAccos and so forth. The steering group is independent of these organisations/individuals, its naive for us to think that inviting such organisations automatically means they are involved in the day to day running of the sacco, individual members will be especially if you register and exercise your right from inside not making noise from the roof top. Be the difference you want to see, position yourself in the right place, then we will see real benefit. THis is just my opinion since I know what I heard as I attended the meeting in person.
