What became of the Diaspora SACCO, was it a still birth? A multimillion non-starter it was! Well from the scanty information that was provided by the founders, the initiate, although NOBLE, the strategy employed lacked credibility right from the onset .It was all about money. Really big money, No information whatsoever was given, they just wanted money? Calling it multimillion SACCO before they even registered a single member was a clear signal of how much money they were after.
Potential members did raise very important issues which the founders should have responded to and clarified what the SACCO aimed to achieve. This never happened and only served to reinforce what many feared. The people behind it were out to take advantage of gullible nature of Kenyans! Greed was the driving force and in typical Kenyan style, a cabinet Minister and High Commissioner among other senior government officials were enlisted to attend to make the whole thing look genuine and credible.
Well, I tell you what, Kenyans abroad have been on this road before!
Okay, Do we need a diaspora SACCO? Yes we do.
My fellow countrymen and women, this shouldnt be the end. Lets have a fresh start. Lets debate on what is to be achieved and the means to achieve this. Please express your ideas of what Kind of SACCO you envisage and from you input, maybe we, as Kenyans can get into partnership. We can start as small sister organisations in cities across UK or Europe then amalgamate into big Credit union that we will all own, once we get the footing.
We can only start small. No Business, or organisation starts BIG. We cant be Multi Million even before we start.
