Former Australia all-rounder Andy Bichel, who last month has been named as the new coach of Papua New Guinea (PNG) talks about his new role as national coach. Bichel is typically enthusiastic about the amount of talent among cricketers in PNG and says that with a bit of direction we can expect big things from them in the not-too-distant future.
Bichel - who played 19 tests and 67 ODIs for Australia, have had an outstanding first class career with Hampshire, Worcestershire, Essex and Queensland taking 769 wickets at 25.98 and scoring 5860 runs at 26.51 with nine centuries.
While speaking at the weekly ICC Cricket World audio, he also expressed his views on the recent Ashes series, which saw his former side go down 2-1 to the old enemy in England. This time, that last toss was a crucial one, says Bichel. We saw at the Oval how the pitch deteriorated and how there were gremlins in the wicket. It really put the writing on the wall for the Australians.
Bichel, 39, had announced his retirement from cricket earlier this year, surrendering to a his should injury, holding an official title as National Coaching Director and as such he will also oversee the PNG under-19 and womens squads.
