I think 2009 is the year PNG Rugby is really taking off...hiring of 7s maestro Serevi, the coming of age of the Aroma Coast 7s with the selection of Kojo Gware in the Menjals, 7s coaching clinic in MEndi, and a small (or big?) breakthrough by Rugby diehards into one of Papua New Guinea's rugby League strongholds - Hanuabada. Lets not forget that it was in Hanuabada that the Rugby League ball was first caught Papua New Guineans when it was kicked across from downunder in the 1950s...PNG Rugby will definitely change for the better if this Leaguees becoming mighy interested in Rugby. I truthfully think that Lahui Ako and his people should be encouraged to bid for a place in the POMRFU in season 2011.
I was told by a Hanuabadan RL personality that they have more than 700 boys aged 13-26 playing in the (unofficial) Poreporena Rugby League competition (without any hope of rep honors, etc...pilai tasol) ...Only 40 of these 700 have the previlege of playing for the Hanuabada Hawks RFLC at the PRL every year...so what about the rest then?
The POMRFU should really get behind the HB Off-season organizers to come up with some strategies, etc, to lock these remaining 600 or so players in into Rugby...imagine another 600 rugby players to the POMRFU fold!!!! or should they be better off instead with their own Hanuabada Rugby Union Association??????
The chief coordinator, Lahui Ako, is virtually an unknown in POMRFU and PNGRFU circles but lets not let this fool us...he is surprisingly someone with a vast amount of network in the rugby circles, particularly in the Asian region...POMRFU or PNGRFU must utilise these advantages to further PNG rugby to the next level. I mean, he did bring the Beijing Brothers RFU to PNG in 2008, didnt he? And guess who coordinated the whole show (between China and PNG)?
