Mt Hagen Tigers

January 8 2012 at 5:04 PM

I coached the Hagen Tigers back in 1990 or so, with players like Michael Angra, Peter Mel, Simon Moi and Peter Dun terrorising the local competition. I was greatly saddened to hear of Michael's death in later years - both he and Peter Dun came with me to Rabaulin the mid-90's, and created the backbone of the initial Islands Gurias team.
Michael was a brilliant footballer, a leader, and a gentleman.

I left PNG in 2000, after 10 years in Hagen and Rabaul. Can anyone tell me what has happened to the old Tigers, and whether the fabulously tough (and shy) Peter Dun is fit and well ?

That's great news. Send him my best.

I saw a number of players in the SP Cup in the 90's who had the potential to play NRL. Peter and Michael Angra were the only two who would have been able to hold their own immediately. Michael had a great football brain, and Peter was a hard and tough workhorse.

Both of them showed what great men they were by leaving their homes in Hagen, and helping me set up the initial Islands Gurias team in Rabaul...
