Does the car have power steering? If so, did you recently disconnect the hoses from either the box or the pump? Perhaps you reconnected 'em backwards? The reason I mention this is that on earlier cars ('65-'70), if the hoses are reconnected backwards, it causes the wheel to violently spin back and forth. With the design of the '71-'73 cars, I wonder if it might do it as well, which might help explain the symptom you described...
