Good old fashioned Christian Book Burnings have always gotten under my skin since the first time I watched the Nazis do such en masse in old WWII films in School History Class.

Granted, burning books are better than burning heretics and witches, but repugnant nevertheless.

So, it bothered me when I read about a Christian Book Burning in North Carolina, but it wasn't until I read the article that I realized how out of the ordinary this Book Burning was...

NC church to burn Satan's books including works of Mother Theresa

"A Baptist Church near Asheville, N.C., is hosting a "Halloween book burning" to purge the area of "Satan's" works, which include all non-King James versions of the Bible, popular books by many religious authors and even country music.

Attendees will also set fire to "Satan's popular books" such as the work of "heretics" including the Pope, Mother Teresa, Billy Graham and Rick Warren.

The event also seeks to destroy "Satan's music" which includes every genre from country, rap and rock to "soft and easy" and "Southern Gospel" and" contemporary Christian."

So, let me get this straight. They are going to be burning Bibles, works by Christian Saints, the Pope, contemporary non-denominational Christians such as Billy Graham and Rick Warren, and even burn Christian Music?

Well, now that's a twist!

I realized that there were extremists of every religion out there, but I never thought that there would be an extremist group that was so far out there that they would commit acts of self-deprecation!

All Christians other than this particular Baptist church in North Carolina are of Satan? Really? Well, I personally considered Christianity to be "Satanic" if ever there was such a thing, but really even this is going pretty far. And Mother Teresa? Any respect I have for Christianity comes from the works of Mother Teresa (and St. Francis, St. Hildegard of Bingen, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. John of the Cross). To equate her, of all Christians, with anything even remotely un-Christian is even more ridiculous than calling the Dali Lama or Gandhi "War Mongers".

Still, despite burning Christian Books and Christian Music, I still find the act to be pretty repugnant nevertheless. Knowledge, Literature, and Art should never be sacrificed to the flames of ignorance.

However, of all the things they could be doing on All Hallows Eve, I suppose a Christian Book Burning of Christian Works is the lesser of evils.
