Ongoing COLLAPSE in deeply religious PNG colllege students

I've been noticing attendance of students at fellowships at UPNG especially but also a bit at Univ of Goroka and have noticed over the last few years especially, a big decline in the interest of our university students.

Christian interest is not going up or even staying stable in our country. It seems to be in state of collapse.

I have thought long and hard about why this is happening.

I think I have 2 conclusions at present which are both based on the fact that our uni students are our most educated elite of young peoples.

Firstly, the pastors often do not explain scripture in a way that is convincing to these young elites. They are not like the last generation that accepted things without question, these people are questioning and not liking the answers or lack of answers coming from the pastors. I believe that pastors have to start knowing the Bible much more deeply on their own, they are now competing against the internet and all that.

Secondly in the past becoming a pastor was a means of developing into a respected person within the community, a rare job opportunity in many communities. People who wanted respect and to be looked up to would naturally try to become local pastors. But today that is a very poorly paid job and way to get respect compared to the alternatives. Educated elites expect to get a position that gives them respect and high pay at the same time. For that reason people who are becoming pastors are now coming more and more from very disadvantaged ranks, those who have no opportunity to be respected excpet to become pastor. Because of all this the quality of our pastors seems to be really going down and that makes it harder to attract uni students to worship and commit themselves to Christ.

Interested in any feedback to explain this depressing situation. I know some very bright and intelligent students at UPNG who actually live a very respectable life, not involved in alcohol, womanising and all that, who still have no interest in joining fellowship or becoming member of any church.

I make these remarks as a parent and a teacher.

I don't believe it has anything to do with being smarter, or being the elite. What i do believe is that the young people of today are more prone to the cares of this world than the peace of the next. Most kids today are online and integrated into a society that views technology as proof of superiority, they are moving away from spirituality and God.

Just as in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah, the last days shall be worse, fornication, adultery, homosexuality, murder these shall become commonplace, they shall seep into every nook and cranny of society so that just as Lot was the only man found upright in that community so too shall a few only be found in this day and age before the Lord comes. "And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication." Rev 14v8.

The devil knows his time is at an end and just like in the days of old he has found that which the young people find delight in and has twisted it to exclude the vision of the Father, instead he has them pointed in circles foolishly believing they are on the right path.

There you go again Wim2012, taking only information that fits your pet theories. Adultery, fornication, homosexuality and murder have ALWAYS been commonplace. In fact the earth is far more peaceful today (vis murder) than it was 500 years ago, and it was far more peaceful 500 years ago on average than 2000 years ago. Homosexuality was alwyas present just like now, but not talked about or people looked the other way. Some of the Greek leaders were classic gay playboys. You need to look at the big picture, not just what suits you, if you really want to know the truth.

I don't believe what you have said was accurate, homosexuality, fornication, adultery, prostitution may have been present, but not in the burden as present, and certainly not with the tolerance it receives currently. Look around you today at the ease of access to pornography, look at the rates of divorce, look at the broken families, can you see with your own eyes the escalation of such?

Congratulations on your ignorance of the 2 World Wars, which killed more people than all previous conflicts prior. Congratulations on your ignorance of the fact that YOU lock your door at night. Congratulations on your total ignorance of the conflicts currently going on all over the world (Afghanistan, Kashmir, Dafur, Sudan, Tibet, North Korea, Taiwan). No the earth is not safer than 2000 years ago, it is gradually becoming a liberal war-zone.

Sometimes looking at the big picture, the details become grey and muddled. The importance of the question posed is lost in the sea of information that is superfluous to it. By looking at the big picture without context you lose the meaning of what you were seeking initially. If someone says to you 'Look at the big picture' they really want you to ignore something that is significant, but more importantly, something that is negative to their reasoning.

These are the "Last Days", the world shall come to an end and just as in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah, there will be a call that goes out. God shall separate the remnant from among the people, the sheep from the goats. He has said in the Bible that right up until the day of the flood people were eating/drinking and being merry, marrying and giving in marriage. But in the last days it will be worse, i'm constantly reminded by this as I walk around and see children swearing at their mothers and mothers swearing at their children. The moral fabric of society is eroding quickly. Beware the fruit of the devil because he knows his time is short.

I can guarantee you that life will go on just like it always has. And when you give your last dying breathe, you won't bother to consider that all your life's illusions about the future never came to fruition. You'll just die and that will be the end of you, just like for everyone. But life in general on this early will carry on, with no devil, no second coming, and no other such supernatural nonsense ever coming into the picture. Sleep well!

I like the way you write guarantee, as if you know what is around the corner, as if you can predict the future. Shall we call you god? No. If I go to the grave having lived a life following the Christian principles of honesty, integrity, humility, love, forgiveness, then even if I have erred and there is no God, then I have lived a life that was meaningful. Yet if I am not wrong and I have not lived according to those Christian principles and Christ does return I will be lost. So you may argue that my faith is pointless, but then either way, by living this life the way I am, I profit, so all I have to say is that I won't lose anything.

So I shall leave the question to you, what if YOU are wrong?

Maybe what religion offers these days leave much to be desired?

Maybe the "role models/priests/eveangicals/preachers" and so-called "men/women of G-d" are discouraging the spiritually starved young men/women?

Students are getting less religious because they're joining the rest of the world. Becoming more modern. More like the global world, like the average australian, european or american sutdent. Religious levels are pretty low in young people nowdays in the world at large.

Smart students eh? Right now someone is paying their tuition fees, and they're on facebook spewing out their cleverness with no time for God, not a care in the world. Wait till they get a job, get few loans, a mortgage, raising kids, possible separation, divorce, global financial crisis, increased cost of living. All these will tend to make them ask what went wrong.

Many will then seriously question the foundation of their worldview and seek answers and help.

But the general falling away from the Faith in these last days has been foretold in God's book. Good Bible student's know these events unfolding and are not moved. It's only news to those who think this will surprise Christians. No, it doesn't surprise us. Many will go after lies and deceits and that is Bible.

But the funny thing is that as surveys have shown, there's no difference at all in the amount of hardship or struggles religious people have versus non-religious. What tends to happen is that the more impoverished you are, the more you turn to religion. But that religion still doesn't allow most people to get out of poverty!!!!!!!!!!

No...absolutely not!! Today's college kids are social media freaks and very shallow as regards real knowledge (TRUTH), wisdom (TRUTH+DISCIPLINE), and morals (GODLY PRINCIPLES)...they know next to nothing about the real message of Christ...otherwise PNG would have been experiencing a revival by now!
