"Bigfoot" On The Prowl in Northwest Arkansas?
October 1, 2003 - Posted at: 3:12 p.m. CDT

DECATUR, Ark. -- A large ape-like animal has been seen over the last several days in and around Decatur (Benton County). Police Chief Coy Hendrix says he received two calls last week and another call Monday from people reporting that they have seen the animal. The first sighting was on Hill street in Decatur; the second caller said the animal was headed north toward Crystal Lake, about a quarter-mile away. Monday's caller said the animal was on Benning Road, several miles east of town.

An employee at the Wild Wilderness Drive-Thru Safari in Gentry said no animal matching the description had escaped from the park. The police chief urged anyone with information that could help explain the mystery to call the department. Decatur is about 220 miles northwest of Little Rock.

From the Benton County (AR) Daily Record:

Prowling primate spotted in Decatur
By Jeff LeMaster Staff Writer
Wednesday, October 1, 2003

DECATUR — A large animal believed to be an ape or a monkey has been sighted several times within the last week both in and around Decatur.

Police Chief Coy Hendrix said he received two calls last week from people reporting they had seen the animal in Decatur. Hendrix said he received a call Monday from another individual who had seen the animal.

Hendrix said the first sighting was on Hill Street, and the second person to report seeing the animal told officers the animal was headed toward Crystal Lake.

Monday’s sighting put the animal on Benning Road, several miles east of town.

An employee at the Wild Wilderness Drive-Thru Safari in Gentry who did not wish to be identified said no animal matching the description had escaped from the park. He did say, however, that the animal would probably try to find a consistent food source. "I imagine it’s scared to death," he said. "It will probably try to shack up near some cattle feed."

Farms may be a specific target for the animal, as they would supply a consistent food and water source, he said.

If the animal has been raised in captivity, it may be acclimated to human contact. This does not mean, however, that if someone sees it he should get close to the animal. Hendrix encourages anyone who sees what they believe could be the described animal to call the Decatur Police Department at 752-3911.

This is not the first time a primate has been loose in the area. In the fall of 1995, a monkey was shot and killed by Gentry police after being cornered on the playground of Gentry Elementary School. Students at the school had to be kept inside while police dealt with the situation.

Mystery Creature is Making Northwest Arkansas Residents Nervous

Mystery Creature is Making Northwest Arkansas Residents Nervous

Decatur - A mysterious creature roaming the Northwest Arkansas area, is making some residents a little nervous. Police have received several calls recently about a large ape like animal in Benton County. The first sighting was in Decatur, the second caller claimed the animal was headed north toward Crystal Lake, about a quarter mile away. Then a third caller said the animal was on benning road, several miles east of town.

There's a lot of speculation about what's lurking in the woods in and around decatur.

(Ike Owens, Resident) "It's freaky. They're saying its Sasquatch. They're saying bigfoot and this and that."

Whether it's actually bigfoot allegedly seen in this vintage film from California is still up for debate. It's certainly the topic of conversation at Gallery Cafe in Decatur.

(David Cook, Resident) "It happens around the nation. Everywhere I guess. It could be here as well as anywhere I guess. It's sure getting around I think it's ridiculous. There's nothing like that in Decatur."

Police say there are a lot of theories about the mystery animal, that's why they're sticking to the facts.

(Coy Hendrix, Decatur Police Chief) "The only description I have is a small brown monkey about a foot and a half tall. It's not bigfoot I believe. I didn't see any tracks of anything."

According to police, the animal has not had any contact with any humans. If you see the creature, you're asked to call Decatur police at 479-752-3911.

Big Or Little

October 6 2003, 10:08 PM

Remembered to put my name in this time.

The story first says its a large animal believed to be an ape or monkey, then the Police Chief says the only description he has is it is a foot and a half tall.

They also had an incident with a monkey a few years back.

Do you think it could be an escaped animal from the wild wilderness safari a few miles to the south of Decatur?

http://www.censusproject.com/arkansas.htm

The listing for Arkansas has 4 primates listed at Wild Wilderness Safari, However An employee at the Wild Wilderness Drive-Thru Safari in Gentry who did not wish to be identified said no animal matching the description had escaped from the park. It should be interesting to see how this turns out.

This is interesting...

October 8 2003, 9:58 AM

because there have been reports since last year about the smaller version of a monkey like creature running around in Louisiana and some other areas also. I had some reports in my area but I have not found anything on it yet nor have I seen anything yet.

Napes or escapees?

October 9 2003, 1:31 PM

My money is on the escapees AFA the little ones go, but who knows? Loren Coleman (in "Mysterious America--Revised") and Chester Moore, Jr. (in "Bigfoot South") believe there are, in addition to Bigfoot, North American apes that are a whole separate issue and even live in some of the same places as BF do, east Texas, for instance. I have no idea what to think of that, however, so I don't think anything one way or the other.

Whole nother animal

October 9 2003, 7:50 PM

Very interesting. That could account for some of the smaller Bigfoot sightings and track finds. But, how can we differentiate between a small Bigfoot and a separate species of unknown ape, especially when we don't have specimens to compare?

Bigfoot Talk Puts Town in Global Spotlight

Bigfoot talk puts town in global spotlight
By Jeff LeMaster Staff Writer newsroom@nwanews.com

Wednesday, October 8, 2003

DECATUR — Decatur has drawn international media attention in the last week because of alleged Bigfoot sightings.

Police Chief Coy Hendrix said he has received phone calls from CNN, CBS and ABC in New York and has participated in a phone interview for a live radio show in Chicago. And a United Kingdom Web site, www.forteantimes.com, has a story about the Benton County town.

Hendrix said he believes the media is blowing the situation out of proportion. "They must be hurting for news," he said.

While eyewitness reports of the animal do not depict it as a nine-foot-tall ape-man, a retired nurse in Siloam Springs has a theory, which she hopes will prevent ruling out the animal as being a Bigfoot.

Jacqlin Castillo, who has participated in expeditions to track Bigfoot in Oklahoma, said that what has been seen in Decatur could be a baby Bigfoot. "They’re not born nine feet tall," she said. "Usually only a juvenile Bigfoot would allow itself to be seen. The adults are too smart to allow themselves to be seen."

Castillo said she is hoping to receive authorization from the Bigfoot Field Research Organization (BFRO) to investigate the possible sightings in Decatur. According to the BFRO Web site, a Bigfoot is defined as "a large, hairy, bipedal non-human primate" that is distributed over the North American continent to varying degrees of concentration. "

"(Bigfoot) are a fascinating species," Castillo said. "They are absolutely out there, but they’re so elusive … I think people need to be educated about them."

Castillo said this is not the first alleged sighting in northwest Arkansas. She said a Bigfoot was allegedly seen by a beekeeper near Siloam Springs two years ago. In addition, she said someone in Elm Springs reported one a few years ago.

Castillo encouraged anyone interested in Bigfoot to go to the BFRO’s web site at www.BFRO.net.

The Benton County Daily Record reported the sightings on Oct. 1. In that story, Hendrix said the creature was a small monkey.

In the Oct. 1 story, an employee at the Wild Wilderness Drive-Thru Safari, who did not wish to be identified, said no animal matching the description had escaped from the park. The safari is three miles southwest of Decatur. The safari official said the animal would probably try to find a consistent food source.

For a time in the spring of 1999, Gomer and Glory Alsup’s farm near Centerton became the home for a Rhesus macaque. The animal lived in the farm’s barn, riding on horses and swinging from the rafters. Centerton is about 10 miles east of Decatur. In a Daily Record story published in 1999, Glory said, "He'll look through the windows and grins with a face that will stop a clock. He sits on the tractor and acts as if he's driving it down the road. He pets the cows. He loves the dogs. He just does everything. Oh … he's a good one," Glory said.

Very interesting ....do you think it is baby bigfoot or monkeys in the areas we keep hearing about in these areas? I know of reports in different states for some reason it seems there are an awful lot of monkeys getting around lately.

Little Bigfoot or monkeys?

October 8 2003, 7:23 PM

Thats interesting. I noticed that too. I didn't know there were that many pet monkeys in the whole state. I have heard of baby Bigfoot being seen. I think the BFRO has a report of one for North-Central Arkansas, and do you recall Jacko? I guess until we get some hard evidence either way we won't know.

You know how the media is...

October 9 2003, 8:58 AM

I take the overall sightings as something very interesting. But I'm not sure the media has all the facts straight just yet.

I've seen only one mention of a "tail" out of all the people who have seen it and if I recall, the story came from a cop reiterating another witness's sighting, which makes it second hand and coming from a probable skeptic. I'd have to read back over the articles to be sure I'm right on that.

The media is going to jump on anything that will downplay it being a bigfoot so I am still not sure it actually had a tail. I think the report of the elementary school monkey that was cornered a while back is playing into the story opinion as well.

I'm waiting to see what happens next.

Bigfoot Has Long, Lively Local History

Mon, Oct 13, 2003
Column By Guy Barnes

The Morning News/NWAonline.net

Happy days are here again! Bigfoot is back. Or maybe it's just
wishful thinking on my part. That's fun, too.

In any case, there have been recent reports of sightings of a large
ape-like creature in and around the western Benton County town of
Decatur.

If it's large and ape-like, but not quite an ape, it's gotta be
Bigfoot. Of course, the published reports didn't say just how big or
how ape-like the critter was, so we can't be all that sure just yet.
But at least I'm hoping.

Having Bigfoot in the neighborhood livens things up. Not only do we
have something to talk about other than them dad-burn lying
politicians, we tend to be more alert. If we go out in the dark and
the hair on our neck starts standing up we go back into the house.

Of course, we don't call 911 right away, but we consider it. A
prickly feeling on one's neck ain't firm evidence, but at least it
makes us more careful. And being careful and alert is what the
Homeland Security folks have been on to us about; they want us to do
it. We might even spot a terrorist that way.

I'll admit that the ape-like creature isn't likely to be somebody
like Osama bin Laden or Saddam Hussein. But you never know. Out of
the ordinary people are always turning up in Northwest Arkansas. Some
come here to hide out in what they think is a wilderness area; a few
make the journey to civilize the hillbillies they expect to find, but
most are those who have hitched their wagons to such rising economic
stars as Wal-Mart, Tyson's and J.B. Hunt.

Then there are the visitors who like what they see and decide to
stay. And that ain't only people I'm talking about.

Canada geese, for instance. Not a native bird, I suspect, or else
they wouldn't be called Canada geese. But we see them everywhere
these days. Rather than them being imported to restore the balance of
nature as were black bears ad certain deer, I have a feeling that a
few of the geese made a pit stop here during migration, found the
area to their liking -- and sent for their kinfolks.

So if geese from foreign parts liked Northwest Arkansas well enough
to settle here, it's possible that Bigfoot did too.

Barring the sightings of the ape-like beast around Decatur turning
out to be an ugly bear walking around on its hind legs, or a
Halloween prankster trying out a new costume for the big night, we
probably have a Bigfoot sighting on our hands. But it isn't the first
one.

Some of those earlier sightings have been explained as something
quite natural; a shadow in the woods, an exceptionally hirsute hippie
or simply a case of overly active imagination. But I can recall a few
where the critter in question left behind evidence of its visit.

Back in the early 1970s a mobile home park on the north side of
Springdale was visited one night by a hulking, hairy and bad-tempered
Bigfoot-like being. In addition to scaring the socks off a handful of
humans in the park and upsetting every do within earshot, it uprooted
a vegetable garden and hammered large dents in the side of at least
one mobile home.

In a separate incident east of Springdale, two men who unexpectedly
came face to face with a Bigfoot in a secluded clearing reportedly
were so unnerved by the experience that they required medical
treatment.

Years later, a large and powerful beast attacked livestock on a farm
in Oklahoma just across the border from Washington County. According
to the Associated Press, the critter "partially slaughtered" at least
one animal. While the AP report didn't specify which parts of the
animal were slaughtered (and which parts lived to tell about it)
there were suggestions that a Bigfoot was the culprit. Whatever it
was -- Bigfoot, bear, mountain lion or wolf -- apparently dined on
the dead part of its victim.

More recently and a little closer to home, bouncers from at least one
watering hole in Fayetteville gathered in a heavily wooded area in
south Washington County for a bit of after hours relaxation which
turned into a Bigfoot encounter.

The lads most likely were doing what men frequently do when they meet
in the woods late at night. And that is either sitting around a
campfire drinking beer and telling lies, or telling lies and drinking
beer while sitting around a campfire. But I wasn't there so I can
only guess.

In any case, according to news reports, festivities were proceeding
as planned when they had an uninvited visitor. A female Bigfoot
crashed the party.

While her motives are unknown, we suspect she had any or all of three
compelling reasons; thirst, curiosity and/or a desire for
companionship. But it was a foolish move. As all young ladies should
know, it is not prudent to go anywhere near men drinking beer in the
woods at any time. Such meetings rarely turn out well.

And this one didn't. Perhaps the bouncers tried to remove her from
the scene in the traditional honky-tonk manner and she resisted. Or
maybe it was a matter of her attempting to deliver hugs and kisses
when none were wanted. But as it happened, the scuffle that developed
ended with the lady Bigfoot being shot and wounded and one of the
bouncers being tossed across the clearing.

While their parting wasn't entirely without rancor, it apparently
wasn't as bad as it could have been. Although the Bigfoot left in a
huff, she didn't seem to be seriously hurt. Neither was the man. But
as somebody said, it was a good thing he was a bouncer or he might
have ended up with a broken bone or two -- or worse.

But back to Benton County's Bigfoot. Is it and the one that had the
run-in with the bouncers the same critter? Or were different animals
involved in all the sightings and too-close encounters?

With luck, it might turn out that we have an entire community of shy
Bigfoots (or is it Bigfeet?) in our midst. It would be a ready-made
tourist attraction, maybe even necessitate the construction of more
hotels.

If they're savvy enough to stay out of our zoos, they should be smart
enough to emerge and claim their rightful place in society, the
business world and politics. Then, again, maybe they are too smart
for that.

Perhaps the best I can hope for is that they continue to keep us
entertained with their well-timed sightings. And that's too bad. I
was hoping to see a Bigfoot running for president one of these days.

NW Bigfoot

October 14 2003, 7:38 PM

I have a sighting to add to that. A cousin of mine saw a Bigfoot while tending a garden back in the 70's. She always said it wasn't a bear. It is a particularly boonieish area, and unlike most of NW Arkansas it hasn't grown up all that much. The location of sighting is in Madison County.
