Something that occured to me...

Since the plan is for all the stories to take place within a 10 year span, I don't need to give my avatar an immortality metagift.

Originally I was comparing this universe too closely with UF (where all the characters that have made it from the Golden Age to the Symphonys are functionally immortal) and thought I'd need it for him to be around by the end.

Instead I can simply change his metagift to increadible luck (aka a Probability Nexus). When he's in the area million to one chances are more like fifty to one. This should be enough to both keep him alive and ensure he suffers from the ancient chinese curse; "May you live in interesting times." 8)

On a different subject, I've got multiple story fragments running around my skull, now if only I could come up with two featuring the same characters....

Or come up with more material for my first Fragment. 8P

Last time I went to Kentucky Fried Chicken, I got a 10 piece. When I put it together it turned out to be a cat.

Thirty years to fifty years. On the other hand, we're positing a massive civilization with presumably highly advanced medical technology. Therefore, it's not unreasonable to assume that the lifespan of an average citizen of the Spiral is double or triple what we would consider normal on 21st century earth.

The Spiral and UF are epic in somewhat different ways. On the one hand, the entire primary superarc of the Spiral is scheduled to take place inside a single generation of cataclysmic change.

On the other hand, you could fit UF's entire known universe inside the Humanx Commonwealth and rattle it.

So he's the Heart of Gold?

So do what I do, and keep writing them down until your subconcious forces you to asseble some and expand others until they form stories.

Blessed be.

Hell even a 20th century human can live that long. 8P Either way, immortality is not a requirement for a character to make it to the end of the story.

The UF-verse isn't _that_ small. You'd have to add on Narn space. 8)

I don't recognise the reference...

Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The Heart of Gold is Zaphod's ship, carrying the Infinite Improbability drive. It looks like a flying trainer IIRC.
