Gryphon] I was thinking more along the lines of the Classic Brick power set, which would be a tremendously amusing thing for a character as... small... as Rei to have. (And she could really get some mileage out of the invulnerability part.) [/Gryphon
It -is- rather the inobvious thing to do with her. And amusing.
But what to do with Touji?
Blessed be.

Well I don't know, I personnaly prefer if she would have the abilety to generate an AT field, and could learn to use it for othger things besies defense such as to make weapons more powerful or flight or whatever (As I understand it AT fields are god's power and they very thing that make your soul indestructible, so it should be possible to do almost anything with them, including making stuff (like lost limbs.)).
While the existence of various psitalents that mirror the effects observed from AT fields is by no means to be ruled out, the rationale for their operation is... well, given how vague that is, and substituting gods for God, pretty close, actually. 'Gods' power' in the mundane world comes from their ability to cheat shamelessly, and that's pretty much what espers do too...
Anyway, the AT field in the sense of some mystical soul-related thing is pushing -real hard- at those areas that are, for the sake of peace among the authors, Not Discussed. A functioning sentient mind creates a pattern of energy fields that can be self sustaining under the right circumstances, but whether or not those are actually -souls-... and what happens after they dissipate... is not known with factual certainty by Us the authors or anybody we're writing about. Likewise, the possibility of an Uncreated Source, a one God, as Christians would have it, is in the same realm of the Unanswerable as "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?"
Going to the center of the Cosmic Omnidimensional Onion (as Eric put it) will get you to a sort of mythic pseudoplane that is the eventual source of the various godflow energies directed at what would best be considered universal concepts (such as the Rihansu's Elements). At the center of -that- is the outside layer of the Omnidimensional Onion - so, everything loops.
There are three... beings? Probability states? Fuck-ass-wierd-whatevers?... that are present on all levels of hyperspace, in realspace, and in the same relative positions in -all universes-. One of them lives in the exact center of the universe. It's right over... there. That big dark blot. Yeah, the Darkvoid. His name's Azathoth, IIRC. Fortunately, he just sits there and contemplates his navel.
Maybe. Hard to tell. He doesn't do anything that we can percieve, anyway.
Then there are higher dimensional lifeforms - hyperbeings. They mostly live (and, often, live quite well) off of the radiant traces of energy that focused thought will send into the aether. Often, these traces will carry with them emotional or intentional imprints that the being will absorb and be affected by. Go read Twoflower's Slayers Demiurge for a better idea how this works.
Anyway, for our purposes, the AT field was invented by the scientific team of Doctors Ayashi and Trussel, and amplifies the abilities of any esper you plug into it, allowing the vehicle (it can only work on specific, discrete objects) mounting it to partake of thsoe amplified powers. Sometimes. Sort of. It's probably the single tech item closest to magic (which does the same thing as psi, in a completely different way) in the spiral today, and magic is never the most reliable thing.
But to have it (and, therefore, an Eva) work, you first need an esper. So, we've been figuring out what talents to give the Children.
Ooooh. Thought - Touji's a Mage. Wizard. Sorcerer. Pointy hat and everything. Talk about going against typecasting!
Blessed be.

>Ooooh. Thought - Touji's a Mage. Wizard. Sorcerer. Pointy hat and everything. Talk about going against typecasting!<
Weren't they supposed to be espers? Granted, magic
comes close, but ... oh, what the heck. Your call
anyway, just that I thought the physical adept
angle more ... well, alright, I'm being partial to a
cliche here.
*sigh* Just that ... well, I can imagine Rei with the
Brick, and it`d be neat ... but the first suggestion
you made, about her being 'in tune' with the universe
and a precog of sorts seemed more appealing. Go figure.
But, while I'm in the EVA topic-zone ...
What about Gendo and Yui? Not the powersets, I mean what
events are you going to be taking from EVA and altering
here? Is Yui dead? If so, how'd it happen? Was she
absorbed into EVA 01, and if so, _do_ the Evangelions
require a bound soul to function in the first place?
Another thing ... what about the Angels themselves.
Obviously, that's a designation for Guild forces, if
I got the proposed storyline interpretted in the right
way, but what about their appearance. Are they going to
be bio-mechs/giant monsters/whatever like in the original
series, or simply heavily modded Mortar Hedds(sp?) ?
And will the Guild actually be stupid enough to send
only one at a time?
Hmm ... well, since the first two or three times defeat
could be considered a fluke, and the Guild pretty
much thinks of itself as 'king of the world' (along
with the Taiidani, Haven, Jurai etc. Power does that to a
people, nation, whatever ...)
So yeah, they may send the first one, then the second,
but I expect they wise up after that and actually go with
a full lance (if I may use the BTech term), and start
a full blown conflict ... that reminds me - I assume
the umbical cords aren't needed? If they are, then the
fights are going to be terribly one way.
Another thing ... Kaworu/Tabris ... are you
going to use him? An undercover esper who has a mission
to destroy Nerv from within ... Reactor explosion within
their base, a suicidial mission ... lots of possibilities
if you do use him.
And what of Gendo's 'secret agenda'? What? Hey, he's Gendo
he _has_ to have a secret agenda! Wouldn't be right
otherwise!
Oh yeah, Gendo's enough of a bastard anyway, without
any powers, so I assume the esper aspect in the family
either skipped a generation, was from Yui's part
of the family tree, or was engineered into Shinji after his
mother died (in which case it was simply the question of
applying a questionable and untested procedure that
had a 1/10th chance of success on a six year old boy
in a state of severe shock.)
Right, I ramble again. Sorry. Too much Eva fanfics read
when I should have been learning. Finals starting in two
weeks time, so I'd better damn well _start_.
-Griever
and to finish on a lighter note, here's something from
a set of bloopers posted on fanfiction.net by A-kun:
Shinji's eyes widened at the sight. He covered his nose as he struggled to get his gas mask on. In it's cage, with coolant surrounding it, Evangelion Unit 01 was farting, making bubbles larger than tanks. The worst thing about this was the fact that both it and Kaworu were laughing like Beavis and Butthead.
