This one came to me in a flash of inspiration and I don't know why any of us thought of it earlier.
Backstory, pre-Contact Commonwealth: The huge mindbending crisis that sparks the war against Venus and forms the EA is precipitated by a series of rather unlikely events surrounding a corporate warship's journey from Earth to Jupiter and back again.
While the crew of the high-mobility battleship Nadesico really honestly didn't -mean- to create chaos, the state of heightened tensions ultimately led to the Duel, which led to the Nakamura Documents, and finally to the Venusian War. The Nadesico would ultimately go on to be the first ship to sign on with Earthforce, lead the defense of Earth against the Venusian armada, and generally do all-around heroic stuff through the course of the war.
(As USS Enterprise is to the UFP Starfleet, HCS Nadesico is to the Humanx Peaceforces? Generations of Hoshinos carrying on the proud tradition of great-grandma Ruri? Think about it...)

I like this.
Hmmm... Nergal would be a Martian company; probably associated somehow with the United Bank of Mars (or whatever the name is. I can't find the reference). Nadesico was built on Earth under contract, commissioned, designed, and built in some ridiculously short period of time because neither the Fed nor the Freep could afford a really -modern- ship to safeguard the planet...
Yeah, I like this. I haven't seen all of Nadesico - the first three disks of the DVD, or so - but I'm glad to see it.

Gah. Omoikane would be around, if no one else. How the hell can you ask me to pass up a computer named "Heavy Metal"?
Blessed be.

Lessee, that would be *rummages though the Mars sourcebook* the Confederated Bank of Mars.
Hm. The Nadesico was designed both to defend the planet from rampaging CEGA/Jovian forces and to act as a "big stick" that the CBoM could use to smack the Fed and the Freep if hostilities came too close to wrecking the terraforming project. Since both sides had a vested interest in the terraforming, they agreed (albeit relcutantly) to let the CBoM have that power to protect the planet itself.
VenusBank, on the other hand, hit the ceiling when they found out a financial instiution -that wasn't them- had access to a capital ship. One junior vice preseident or another decided that they couldn't let Nergal deliver the Nadesico to CBoM, and the rest is history.

By the time we get to Spiral proper, Omoikane is probably running most of New Berlin as a hobby. %)

Hmm ... the idea has merit. My first thought was - hey, let's make her immortal or something - but that's been done over and over and over ... we do need a lookalike thought - she's just so kawaii!

'Still of a winter's night, they say, when the wind is in the trees
When the moon is a ghostly galleon, tossed upon the cloudy seas,
When the road is a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
A highwayman comes riding,
Riding, riding,
A highwayman comes riding, up to the old inn-door.'
