Trying to get to one of the threads today I'm accosted by a popup blocking the view advertising a bit of Net54 spyware. I tell it got lost, 'cause I'm a suspicious bastard and don't trust any stinking spyware.
The kicker is, when closing it puts up a window saying "Please note that Network54 EntryPass may
be required for future visits." Say -what?-
Nathan, put this down as a sign that we should pack up and leave. Right Fucking Now.

...na?
The FUCK?!
Yes. Agreed.
Honestly, the only reason I can see for us to still be here is saving all the old threads/information/discussion.
It's all still there, of course, but sorting through it and figuring out what to take would fall under the LE's purview... and I just haven't had the energy. This is especially true now, since I have two different research papers, both mostly unstarted, that I need to finish well before Finals, so I really can't afford to have anything -else- eating my brain (Halo is doing a more than good enough job of -that- already, thanks a fucking heaping helping).
So. Anybody have a reccomendation for where we should head? Floor's open.
Blessed be.

Yahoo's a possibility, but they at one point were hiding "all your base are belong to us" clauses in the EULA, so that might not be the best place to go. Also it's email based, which reduces the level of transparency we've had here.
My favored suggestion would be to move over to EZBoard, or maybe find somebody with a bit of server space who'd be willing to accomodate a DCForum setup. Christ, we could even use blog software like Movable Type or Scoop if we felt like it.

Disclaimer: I am not at all web (or, for that matter, really -computer-) savvy. I know enough to follow instructions competently, but not much past that.
That being said, I have a pretty sizable college-provided account that I'm not doing much with at the moment. We'd have to move again in '06 (unless I go completely insane and go for a higher degree, or something similarly unlikely), but what little I know of the subject says that that'd do for DCF...?
We could even update the webpage while we're at it.
Blessed be.

Slapping a phpBB2 message board onto general-use webspace would likely fit any needs we have. It includes a search function, mod and admin access to update/move posts as needed, and is very easy to set up and admin. (Oh, and it's free, too.)
Another bonus, if/when we need to move again, the accumulated docs are all in a single SQL database. Grab that file via FTP download, and go.

PhpBB sounds like a good solution, but I'm moderately wary about putting the board on a college server, because student accounts tend to be a bit... flexible in the eyes of the admins. I know this, because I used to be one.
As far as reliable webhosting goes, I suggest www.sandwich.net. It's a smallish one-man band run out of San Diego and is no stranger to anime or fanfic sites (it hosts a couple of .//hack boards, frex). It's pretty cheap, about $8 a month for 10 megabytes and SQL service.
Food for thought.

ahem. anywhere _but_ yahoo is my two cents' worth of a suggestion.
let's list what we _need_ or are looking for in a new forum, then go searching. here's the first suggestion:
- a search function - for when we need to find some tidbit we know is in there but have no idea as to the whereabouts.

I'm sorry, but anything from this end of the pipeline will have to wait until after finals. I'd search frantically for ways to find a safer haven that -didn't- involve shelling out money... if I had any brainshare.
*shrug*
See ya in a few weeks.
Blessed be.
