A villager's perception of Independence

In the early days of a resource company's establishment in Papua NewGuinea. It was the company's policy to educate the villagers of what was going to take place in their humble environment.

During one of these visits they met with the village elders, explaining to them about what this company will be doing in their area. Telling them that there will be some development and services provided to them. The village elders were happy to hear the good news.

While the officers were in the village the elders took this opportunity to ask them about the meaning of independent. These humble villagers thought this independent was a temporary thing. So they asked, "when will this independent finish?" The officers sadly replied "sori papa em ino inap long pinis. Em bilong stap olgeta long Papua New Guinea".
