Our 13 (almost 14) year old daughter had the surgery to place the BAHA's at Johns Hopkins last fall. They attached the hearing aids in December and she is doing great. She has been hearing things that she was not able to hear with the bone conduction aid she had worn prior to the surgery. Erin is doing well in school (A'a and B's at grade level) - she continues to get support from a teacher of the hearing impaired and a signing interpreter at school as well as speech therapy (the frequency has been decreased markedly as she has gotten older). The purpose of the interpreter is for visual backup (Erin is in an open space school and background noise is always an issue even for normal hearing students). She hears pretty well but at times (especially as the school work gets harder - she will be in high school next year and will continue with the same support) needs more visual cues in class. I am sure that her speech therapist (who is with the Baltimore County, Maryland school system) would be glad to touch base with you if you are interested. Also Erin and I would be happy to answer any questions that you may have for either of us.
