Auction no 125:

ROLEX, "Goalkeeper, Mr. Pelle Lindberg´s" Oyster Perpetual, Datejust, Chronometer, Ref no. 16013F, Serial no. 5878534, Cal 3035, Movement no. 0416070, Case no. 16000, men´s wristwatch, 36 mm, steel/gold, self winding, plastic crystal, date, engraving (Canada Cup 1981), Jubilee bracelet, folding clasp, Ref no. F/455, approx 1981.

Pelle Lindbergh lived as if he would only be 26 years. As a child Pelle Lindbergh dreamed to become a goalkeeper in the Philadelphia Flyers. The dream would become reality, and in 1985 he won the first European Vezina Throphy, the prestigious prize as the best goalie in the NHL. Five months later it was all over. The dream faded against a white wall. The love for high speeds and a red Porsche took Pelle Lindberg's life, at the age of 26.

We have been entrusted to sell the Rolex watch Pelle Lindberg got before the Canada Cup, 1981. The coach Bo Tovland , tells us that the players that was chosen for the Swedish team, had requested a Rolex watch and a Sony Walkman each, to participate in the tournament. He says that the team on paper was one of the best Swedish teams of all time but unfortunately it went straight to the forest and the team was eliminated. "Had we known it from the start they would not have gotten any watches," he laughs.

On June 4, 1985, Pelle Lindbergh and his girlfriend Kerstin was heading home to Sweden from New York, on an SAS airplane. By coincidence they were seated next to a Swedish newspaper, Bert Willborg. They talked about hockey but later started to talk about watches to. Pelle asked Bert if he wanted to buy his Rolex because he had just bought a new one. They agreed a price of 11 000 and were both satisfied.

The watch remained a cherished possession of the now deceased Bert Willborg and friends remember how he liked to tell the story of how he bought the Rolex from the world-famous goalie. The story is also mentioned in the book "Pelle Lindberg, Behind the White Mask" by Thomas Tyna Westender.
