      and in fact, gold watch up until at least the late 40s, did not have serial number that made any kind of sense to anyone trying to estimate age.

      W&D stamp certainly indicates early 1900s.

      A picture would give us more information... if you take pictures, make sure you open the watch up and show us the movement, as well as the hallmarks. The hallmarks will pinpoint the year of case manufacture.
