...I think James was the starting point for many current collectors and was/is one of the most visible, accessible experts around. People love to look back at some of his earlier work and say; "Ooh,James was wrong about this or that" never taking into account (or ignoring) the explosion of study and information gathering that has taken place over the last five or six years. James was an expert back when it was hard.
He and Jeff Hess did an amazing job of collecting the information they put in their first and subsequent books. The Italians, Germans, Asians, and French were way ahead of the English speaking world in the study of vintage Rolex and James and Jeff legitimized vintage Rolex as a collectible for thousands of people and probably not in a small way are responsible for the state of Rolex collecting today. Gentlemen, it wasn't that long ago when everyone was stunned when a 6062 brought 35K!
James and Jeff's generosity were directly responsible for the work we were able to do on the Project. They allowed us to use the serial number table they had generated as a basis for the work Richard O. did in indexing thousands of additional numbers to create what is probably the most accurate SR number resource in the world. I'm guessing a lot of you don't recall what a mystery serial numbers used to be.
So yeah, I think there's some pretty good vintage advice to be had at TZ.

TZ seems to be a starting place for many >>>>

It seems after some knowledge is gained people usually go elsewhere or get banned for some minor infraction of their restrictive rules.
The members here are several notches up in knowledge from TZ but that is JMHO. Many big collectors do not post on TZ but post here.
Several new vintage Rolex forums have been added to at least three busy Rolex sites and I think it is great. Of course VRF is the best vintage Rolex forum but that goes w/o saying. Dennis

VRF by far is a more comprehensive site for vintage collectors and knowledge. The layout is easier on the eyes, and the additional tools for looking up serial number ranges and dials are tremendous assets for a new collector such as myself.
I check out TZ's vintage section once in a while, and it just serves as a reminder why I spend my time almost exclusively on VRF....
I would venture it is in many ways a difference of style than

content. Many here are also members of that forum...so you will often find very similar posts. I think the mood/style/feel of VRF is (as Richard often describes it) like going to dinner with good friends and talking (yes even arguing) about a mutual passion. Even though commerace takes place here, it is with a low key and a restrained voice. We do not have tons of adds and graphics hawking various brands...we just have people talking to each other.
And none of this is to take anything away from TZ. We are VRF...and they are TZ...the differences between the two sites are good and as it should be.
TZ vintage was really good at one time and conversely, this place had a lot less posters. in fact, a lot of the contributors here used to hang out at TZ, but the heavy handed moderation sort of blew it in the minds of most and they moved on.
if you're implying that those at TZ know less than other sites, you've got to have been there from the start make that qualification. =)
