If they look to be deteriorating.
I've done this for a couple I've sold because the owners wanted new inserts fitted to freshen them up.
I just varnished the existing "dot above 90" one to stabilise/seal it and glued a modern one in.
I used matt varnish from a modeling shop, Humbrol or simililar.

are available in a matt finish, that when applied you wouldn't know were there and would serve to offer some protection to the insert from scratches, ie kind of acting like a sacrificial layer. Add in some UV protection, like Ciba Geigy's Tinuvin, and it would help arrest any further fading of the insert
