Help needed to identify an old Rolex please

My friend has inherited this watch from his grandfather, and is looking for more information on it (i.e. model, and estimated value for insurance purposes). He doesn't have original papers for it. His gran thinks it was bought in the 1940-50s.

I initially posted this on TZ-UK and a helpful member posted this link http://www.anthonygreen.com/detailofrolex3064.html), so this may identify the model. However, any information that the knowledgeable members here could add would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much everyone!

Ahhhhh....

I'm thinking that reply doesn't sound too encouraging...

A few replies on the TZ-UK site are also a bit dubious about the authenticity. I'll see if he can get some photos of the movement and let you know what results.

I don't suppose he'll mind much, as it's the sentimental value more than anything else, but it would take some of the joy out of it if this turned out to be a franken.

I don't see any real issues...except refinished dial

The case looks legit. Show me the movement.

There would be no real papers for this watch...excepting a guarantee card.

"Papers" are for Chronometer grade watches only and this is not that.

The watch is spot-on....

although the dial has been repainted.

The "dimple" winder is also original (-Rolex-) to the watch.

A fair second hand replacement value would be around GBP £2,000 (~$3,000) for insurance purposes.

I sold a similar watch some time ago, which was also a 470*** case number.

Ah, good...

Because I'd indicated something similar and was beginning to feel like a minority of one happy.gif

Thanks for your reply Mike, much appreciated. And to the others who replied also. I shall pass this information onto my friend.

That's interesting about the dial having been repainted.

Thanks again,
Andrew.
