Well it could be the parallax of the xtal but for me there is something strange...

August 7 2012, 6:54 PM

...about that dial, I'm sorry to say.
I have never seen a meters-first 551x dial layout quite like that one before.
If you can take a head on macro shot and size it about 1200x1200 I think all will be clear one way or the other.
I sincerely hope I have to apologize to you for getting it wrong.
But a meters first dial should look like this:
[linked image]
(Photo from the Archive by Balu53)
And from the pix you show, I'm afraid it doesn't.
Best,
T.

Must be the distortion. When I hold the watch up to the iPad....it looks the same as the above pic.

I purchased it from Dominique Wieland. Formerly of Rolex, and has a Rolex service business here in West MI since he emigrated to the US.

Thank you for you concern though!

Could be but I doubt it....

August 7 2012, 8:26 PM

...even accounting for that, they don't look the same to me:

[linked image]
[linked image]

"S" in SUBMARINER, "R" & "X" in ROLEX, the amount of minute ticks around SWISS T-25, the coronet, some of the spacing...all different and all add up to close but no cigar.
There is one other iteration of meters first dial that I am aware of but from what I can see yours doesn't match this one either:
[linked image]
(Photo from Archive by timlua, rotated by me)
While a bigger pic from you would certainly help I still say you should really look very carefully at these pics of the verified 551xs and then think about getting your money back.
Best,
T.

Sorry Mike...

August 7 2012, 8:05 PM

But I have to agree with T. The letter placement and configuration is completely wrong on this dial. Take a good look at the referenced meters first dial.....it simply doesn't comply.
Godspeed
A

Sorry I also have to agree.

August 8 2012, 5:39 AM

My biggest issue is also the T spacing. I would expect to see 5 "short" ticks under the Swiss - T spacing, however looking at the picture I only see 3 short ticks.

This alone would put me off it.

Perhaps a better picture would help.

Andy

I appreciate your concern, guys. This is exactly why I bought from a brick and mortar venue. Dom Wieland comes with the appropriate provenance:

Dominique is a 5th generation Swiss watchmaker and has been passionate about the fine family tradition from an early age.

In 1976 he enrolled at the Technical School of the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland and graduated in 1979. In 1980 after few months of training at the Omega Headquarters in Bienne he moved to London to develop his professional skills with Omega After Sales Service. In 1981 he worked for a jeweler/retailer of Swiss watches in Vancouver B.C. returning to Switzerland in 1982 to help manage the family jewelry stores, the Lausanne based Guillard S.A. In this capacity he accumulated expertise in sales and servicing of high end swiss timepieces such as Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Piaget, Cartier, Ebel, Omega, Longines among others.

After emigrating to the United States in 1992, Dominique joined the Rolex Service Center in Dallas, TX. As a technical instructor he trained inside and outside watchmakers on the specifics of Rolex watches. In 2000 he moved to Lititz, PA where he helped launch the first Rolex Watchmaking School, the Lititz Watch Technicum. During his five years with Rolex Dominique had the privilege to have numerous training courses at the Rolex, Geneva HQ and at the WOSTEP School in Neuchatel.

In 2002 he launched his business in West Michigan specializing in the service and repair of Rolex and other fine mechanical Swiss timepieces.

I will visit him this morning and bring your comments forward.

Again, the concern for other members is nice to see.

Mike

Sorry for jumping the gun, Mike. In the first photos...

August 8 2012, 5:49 AM

I was taken with the orange lume and I couldn't see the differences Tom points out. He's obviously got a way more expert eye I than I do to be able to spot things at that angle. But your direct face shot doesn't match up with my mf dial either. Sorry man.

I'm afraid I also need to make an observation...

August 7 2012, 11:58 PM

I'm no Sub expert (I play in the realm of the GMT, mostly), but it appears to me that the second hand is sitting way above where it should be in relation to the hour and minute hand.

Can one of the real pros following this thread please confirm or deny this?

Ron

It has taken me.........

August 8 2012, 1:57 AM

Ten minutes looking between the two watches, just to see what I think is the difference with the markers at 6 o'clock position!!!

And I have failed miserably with the rest of it.

So much to learn.

Still to me it looks like a lovely looking watch happy.gif

August 8 2012, 11:31 AM

Doesn't look good Mike but as you say you have bought from someone who can make things right for you
although its obviously disappointing that an "Expert" like that could have made this mistake.

Let us know how you go on.

Dear Experts

If possible, I would be grateful if you could possibly mark the points that you you dispute.

I have looked time and time again, I still can't work out what I am looking at?

Please help a novice to learn happy.gif

If the OP would provide larger scans, this would be cleared up one way or the other in about 5 seconds.

Right or wrong.

Got to be crazy to share photos.

Was thinking of posting some pics of my collection but no more.

You're right--fake dials will get reamed--but maybe the buyer can get his money back...

August 8 2012, 9:36 PM

...of course you're under no obligation to post anything here.

Tom is so right , better to know sooner then later , when issues can be sorted >>

August 9 2012, 1:12 AM

Pretty hard to go back to seller in a year and say hey , some issues I think with that watch ?

If I'm gunna get slapped in the face with a dose of reality one day better it be whilst I have some recourse !

Picky? So you would rather not know what you have paid for?

August 9 2012, 4:34 AM

So now you will never know what you have.
You could sit on a watch like this for years never knowing you had bought
a nasty fake for genuine Rolex money.

I would post pics of everything i had and get it authenticated here rather than never know.

Genuine Rolex are showered with love and affection here so you
should have no fear.

Like others here I learn a lot, BUT not in my wildest dreams would I have seen the discrepancies that you kindly highlighted in the photo.

well, looks as if the watch was returned successfully...says alot about the integrity of the watch maker, not so much about his knowledge base, perhaps.
