Dear Mr. Weiner:
I am currently out of status and would like to get a driver's license. My current state does not allow person's without SSN's to get driver's license. How legal would it be for me to get a driver's license in another state? I am going to adjust my status within the next year and I would like to know if doing this would cause any further problems. I appreciate your attention to this matter.
KM.

Since the events of September 11, most states have changed their policies for issuing driver's licenses and now require a Social Security Number (SSN) and proof of legal immigration status.

Once you submit your application for permanent residency, however, you will receive a work permit, which will allow you to obtain a SSN, which in turn will allow you to finally obtain a driver's license.
