If i as a UK citizen enter the USA on a J1 visa or student visa and marry a US citizen who then has my child, will i have a strong case when i apply for residency?

When applying for US residency, the USCIS (the new name for the INS) will examine your relationship with your wife to satisfy itself that your marriage is a real one and not one entered into simply for immigration purposes. Your having a child together is one factor that would be considered among many, such as proof that you are living together, your commingling of financial assets, etc.
