I am a Canadian citizen hopelessly in love with an American citizen. We have been engaged for 2 months and have been looking into Visas to get myself and my 3 children into the US. I have been told Canada does not do its own paper work , and getting married in the US and thier paperwork takes forever . I have been told to try and get married in a country that does it`s own paper work , does that mean somewhere like the Dominican Republic ? We have no control over who we love , and when it happens and you are from 2 different countries ,,,governments seem to just get in the way . How can we make this proccess livable . What do I have to do to be with the man I love . Please help me get some answers .

Don’t despair yet!

There is a well-defined process for someone who is engaged to a US citizen to get a K-1 fiancée visa. The only variable is the processing time, which depends in large part on where your fiancé lives. If you had received proper advice and assistance from the outset, at this point you could be well on your way to joining your fiancé or already in the US.

Whatever you do, DON’T get married until you clearly understand what your visa options are. Once married, your options become more limited and the processing times potentially lengthier.

To further discuss your options and for assistance in the visa application process, please contact my office to arrange for a consultation. Because of the unique nature of US immigration law, I can assist and provide legal representation to you and your fiancé no matter where you’ll be settling in the US – from my office in Boston I have clients throughout the US and around the world.

I now look forward to hearing from you so that we put you on the right track.
