Dual citizenship

Hello,

I have been married to an american girl for over 6 years now, I'm a permanent resident in the US since 2001. I have 2 sons whom born in this contry and are American citizens. I have 3 questions:

1. If I register them to the French embassy here they will become French citizen, but could they loose their american citizenship?

2. When is the best time to register them, before 18 yers old or 21? (I might register them next year actually so it might not be an issue)

3. Do you know of any web site (or links) that will tell me if possible or not possible and what problem they may have later on? (I want them to be dual citizens but I don't want to compromise their stay in the USA)

Thank you for any answer you may provide.

US immigration law allows dual citizenship as long as the other country also allows it, which is indeed the case for France. In terms of registering your children with the French authorities, you should consult with a French attorney to determine what age is appropriate for registering them.

Finally, the US government has published an excellent guide on this issue (from the US perspective), Citizenship Laws of the World, published by the Investigations Services of the US Office of Personnel Management (the entry for France appears on page 78):
