Dear Mr Weiner,

I would be very grateful if you could throw some light on these questions. What the duration of a F1 visa? I will soon begin a six month ESL program in DC. After that I'm thinking of trying to enroll in a college. Since I am starting with a 6 month program, will my F1 visa be issued for only 6 months or is there a standard validity for F1 visa?

Is there any 6 month F1 visa by the way?

sincerely,

Lloyd

The validity period of an F-1 visa depends on your country of citizenship. For example, for citizens of Western Europe, Australia, Japan, etc., F-1 visas generally are valid for 60 months. In your case, however, where you’ll be attending a 6-month ESL program, the visa may only be valid for the duration of the program.

In any event, if you decide to continue your studies after completing your ESL program, you can extend your status in the US without having to travel abroad.
