IBIS stands for Interagency Border Inspection System and is one of the numerous background security checks that the USCIS conducts before it can approve your green card application. Since the events of September 11, the waiting time for clearance of these checks has skyrocketed, and it’s not unusual for applicants to still be waiting for a response 12 months after their interview. It’s impossible to say how long you’ll still have to wait.
You and your attorney need to regularly inquire about your case status. If your attorney is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), ask him/her to submit an inquiry through the local AILA chapter.
