yes, had to go on Paxil...works like a charm

November 7 2009, 1:07 PM

I avoided anti-depressents for years but knew full well that I needed to be on one. I was going off to people about the littlest things and having panic attacks at night. Then I read in a book about immune issues that low seretonine can cause immunity issues! The RE who wrote the book actually recommended antidepressents because they raise your seretonine levels!

I have at least two immunity issues so I started on Paxil because I could not tolerate zoloft or effexor. Paxil is generic and it works great!

Best decision of my life. I tolerate it well and I am much calmer and relaxed and no panic attacks. I am nicer to my DH and people have commented how I seem more at peace and happier.

I absolutely LOVED Cymbalta but the doctor would not let me continue on it because it hasn't been out long enough to get enough pregnancy data so she switched me to Paxil. It works great and is generic. I started on 12.5 but 25mg works better for me.

Is Paxil safe for pregnancy? I was on Lexapro because I had low serotonin levels, but then got worried because one RE said they weren't sure of the effect it might have on egg quality. I got off, but I remember that I felt so much better on it. I was a much better person, didn't snap at everyone that got in my way, and just felt like life was worth living.

RE was fine with it.......

Even though drug companies test their drugs for pregnancy and breastfeeding they will never come out and say something is safe for pregnancy because of the liability.

The FDA rarely gives an "A" rating for drugs and pregnancy/breastfeeding. However, when you have a drug like Paxil that is generic, it has been out on the market long enough that any problems with pregnancy would have been discovered a long time ago. Doctors, therefore, are more comfortable prescribing Paxil then the newer drugs. I really wanted to stay on Cymbalta but because it was so new my DOC said No way.

I yawned my a$$ off on Effexor and Zoloft and I could not get over feeling like I wanted to hurl all the time! My friends swear by Zoloft but it was too intolerable. My girlfriend who takes Zoloft and got PG, stopped it for awhile to see if she could get through the pg without it. She was such a mess that her doctor put her back on it and she did fine.

Paxil is a category "D" drug- known to case birth defects

November 7 2009, 4:31 PM

I think you need to consult another doctor besides your RE- he is obviously not up to date on this one. The first warning was in Sept. 2005. In Dec. 2005, the warning was strengthened and paxil was moved to a category "D" drug.

This is not the drug to prescribe for someone ttc. There are much better drugs for panic attacks that can be taken if needed when pregnant. Paxil is also notoriously difficult to come off of- do not stop taking it without being under medical supervision. It is a good drug- but this is not the time to start it. A high-risk OB or psychiatrist can much better help you weigh the risk-benefits of this drug.

The verdict on the first of the lawsuits just came back on Oct.25th.(just a few weeks ago) Here is the summary of that ruling:

Glaxo Must Pay $2.5 Million in Paxil Birth Defects Case
Sunday October 25, 2009

According to a report in The Philadelphia Enquirer, GlaxoSmithKline, manufacturer of the antidepressant Paxil, must pay $2.5 million to settle a claim that the drug caused severe heart defects in 3-year-old Bensalem, PA boy.

The verdict is the first in 600 similar cases, which allege that Glaxo knew Paxil causes birth defects, but hid that knowledge in order to protect their profits.

Paxil generated about $942 million in sales last year, accounting for 2.1% of Glaxo's total revenue.

The boy's mother, Michelle David, claimed that her son, Lyam Kilker, suffered from life-threatening heart defects because she had used the drug during her pregnancy. There was no previous history of heart defects in her family, according to David.

By a 10-2 margin, the jury found Glaxo had "negligently failed to warn" David's doctor about Paxil's risks and that the drug was a "factual cause" of the boy's heart defects. They also found that Glaxo's handling of the drug was not "outrageous", meaning that the family could not seek punitive damages.

The jurors awarded the family more than double the $2.1 million that had asked for in order to provide for Lyam's past and future medical expenses related to the heart defects.

The verdict arrives at a time when the medical community is seeking to reevaluate how to treat pregnant women. An August report from the American Psychiatric Association and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommended that pregnant women should consider psychotherapy before taking antidepressants. It further stated that women with moderate to severe depression should probably remain on their medication, but the risks might outweigh the benefits for women with mild depression.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which is the class on antidepressant which Paxil belongs to, have been linked to various problems, including a higher incidence of pulmonary hypertension, a condition in which increased lung pressure can lead to heart failure. In 2005, the FDA reclassified Paxil as a drug with some evidence of risk of the human fetus, but allowed doctors to continue prescribing it to pregnant women if the benefits outweighed the risks.

Glaxo issued a statement saying that they planned to appeal the verdict.

"While we sympathize with Lyam Kilker and his family, the scientific evidence does not establish that exposure to Paxil during pregnancy caused his condition. Very unfortunately, birth defects occur in 3 to 5% of all live births, whether or not the mother was taking medication during pregnancy," the company's statement said.
