One high FSH result, then 2 normal. Confused!

Hi there

Just joined the forum although I've been reading the posts for a few months now.
I'm 34, TTC for 15 months.
In February I went for a standard fertility check up as we'd been TTC for 12 months. I have MS but this usually does not affect pregnancy or fertility in any way.
Got called back for blood results and my FSH was 38.4. Had no idea what this meant and the GP said if I still have regular periods it's probably just "stress". Got googling and realized the severity of the news, was completely beside myself.
Repeated the test the following month and the FSH result came down to 5.8!!! Quite a drop then? What the hell is going on?
Have just repeated the test for the 3rd time and result is 6.0. So one sky high result, followed by 2 normal results. My progesterone was tested once and was also normal. Hubby's results all fine.
From what I have read though 1 high result is the end of the road for my own eggs so I have been a total mess. My hubby is v optimistic that it must be a lab error or anomaly? I can't seem to find any other stories of such huge fluctuations.
My cycles are short, only 24 days, but regular.
Waited by to have AMH and AFC done in 6 weeks time.
Please can anyone let me know if they have had such fluctuations with their results.
Thanks!

Was your first FSH done on day 2 or 3? If not, then I would go with the only test done on these days. If so, I think you may just have had the fluctuation which is not unusual. Also, keep in mind if your estrogen was elevated with any of the readings, it drives down FSH levels. I have been told you only respond as good as your highest FSH reading, which for me has been true.

I had many different FSH levels. Once it was 32, the next month, 5. However, my antral follicle count has remained pretty consistent and that is what I think you really need to know how well you will respond to the meds. AMH is also somewhat useful.

I think your levels (assuming done on day 3) tell you need to see a doc for high fsh, be very proactive, and use a protocol for poor responders.

Also, I see you mention a GP. You absolutely need to see an RE (reproductive endocrinologist) for treatment of infertility. Even OBs are not specialized enough. I'm guessing you probably are since you mentioned AMH, but just in case, I wanted to add this information.

Thanks for the response.
All 3 FSH tests were done on day 3 but have not had estrogen/estradiol tests done at all.
I'm in the UK on the NHS so have now been referred by my GP to an RE who will check my AFC and AMH.
Saw the GP today and he was very optimistic that with 2 normal results the high one must have been a "blip".
I hope and pray he's right but after all I've read online I'm also trying to prepare myself that it could be serious.

Unfortunately, I do not believe you can rely on your lower FSH test results without having estrogen in combination. There is just no way to know whether or not your level was being suppressed or not by your estrogen levels. I am glad you are having additional tests run and think you will have to wait on those to see what is going on.

My results fluctuated 34.8, 2.4, 4.1 before my DS was born (more ment)

April 17 2016, 11:33 PM

Hi,
I am a grad lurker who is 51 years old and have an 11 year old son and 9 year old daughter. My FSH levels fluctuated even more before I conceived my DD. 110 was the highest and 17 was the lowest. I was 39 when I conceived my DS and 41 with my DD. I had short cycles of 24 days as well and went through menopause early at age 46. I did not do IVF but chose to do acupuncture and herbs. I did have 2 miscarriages before my DS was born and then 1 more m/c before my DD was conceived. My OB told me that I had a better chance of conceiving with the fluctuations rather than with a consistent lower high FSH level like 17. I hope this is helpful!

Thank you so much. That gives me some hope. I've also started acupuncture and supplements now.

Toni thank you for this. I have started acupuncture as well.
Please can you tell me which herbs you took? I am inspired by your story!
Thanks

Sorry I see I did repeat my post there.
Was also wondering how many years you were TTC?
