Hi all,

Sorry in advance for the huge post. I'm feeling really lost at the moment and just want to get it all out.

I have been trying to conceive a second child for 5 months. I am 31, hubby is 33 and our daughter is 3.

I went to the doctors a few weeks ago about a lump on my neck I've had for awhile, and it turns out its a thyroid nodule, quite large. My tsh levels were fine so the GP thinks my thyroid function isn't being affected however I am due to see a specialist in a few weeks and will have to have a biopsy. GP said chance of it being benign are 80% however if it is cancer I will likely have to wait another 6 months to start trying for a baby again. In the meantime we have stopped trying while we wait for the specialist appointment.

The GP ordered full bloods and googling the results has made me sick with worry. By chance these were taken on day 3 of my cycle:
Fsh 12
LH 5
E2 104
Prog 3.6

The doctor didn't mention anything with these numbers and it was only by googling that I've realised they are too high! What should I do? Wait til after the specialist appointment in another 2 weeks? Start acupuncture in advance and hope the nodule is benign? Go back to the GP and demand a referral to a fertility specialist?

I haven't even mentioned this to hubby yet but I was awake most of last night feeling horrible and anxious. I'm only 31 and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to have #2! Our daughter was conceived without trying so I nerve imagined this lay ahead for me!

my thoughts MENTS here and in original post

First, I wish all goes well with your thryoid biopsy. That is certainly scary and you don't need to worry about more in the meantime. You should know that your numbers are not terrible and there are countless success stories with stats that are much worse. It looks like your fsh is a little high. Your E2 is also a little high, which indicates it's masking your fsh a little bit and the actual number is a little higher. Still not terrible. I think that until you were to get an antral follicle count (AFC) that you don't have a complete picture of what is going on with you so it's early to be very concerned. I'm sure you are sick of going to doctors at this point but I do suggest you go to a reproductive endocrinologist for 2 reasons. If your AFC is high I would be much less concerned about the other numbers and second is that should you need to take any action in regards to your thryoid they can give you their 2 cents. I would say having that information will make you feel less uncertainty, which I can only imagine will help your stress level. ***MENTS Please know that having proven fertility is a huge factor that points very positively for you. END MENTS****

Thanks for your message. Sorry I don't know what MENTS means but I assume it's reference to having a child, my apologies for not including it in my original title I'm not quite down with the protocol yet.

I think you're right with the E2 levels pushing down FSH sad.gif also I think the Prog is also high for day 3 but don't know what if anything that means.

I have booked in to acupuncture starting June (earliest available appointment they had). I plan on seeing the GP next Thursday and explaining the situation and seeing if she can give me a reference to a FS - preferably a reproductive endo as you suggested. I think she'll want me to check out the thyroid situation first but considering the thyroid appointment is the following week and I'm likely to wait much longer for the specialist hopefully she'll say yes. Of course if the nodule is cancerous I'm barred from falling pregnant for 6 months due to the iodine treatment. And who knows what my fertility will be like by then.

I am trying to not freak out about it but it's really hard. I'm so much more concerned about my potential fertility issues then potential cancer!

I would not worry too much about your numbers at this point. I would first concentrate on the thyroid issue and get past it. In the meantime, I would absolutely make an appointment with a fertility specialist. Do you have to have a referral? If not, I would look for people that are high FSH friendly in your area.

Were your numbers on day 3? If not, they aren't of much value. If so, they still aren't that bad and you can definitely work with them. I think your FSH is being driven down by elevated estrogen, but even so, you can work with them. I had success with an FSH 18 and then a second time with an FSH of 32 (taken 2 years before I became pregnant). For me, it was an uphill battle and took persistence but it all worked out. I would just get in to see a high FSH friendly RE once your thyroid is taken care of (I say make an appointment now b/c they are sometimes hard to get in to). You can post your location on this board and people can help you out.

I have found the antral follicle count to be more important than FSH and you really won't know this until you see a fertility specialist.

sorry! I just reread the original post and see they are day 3 numbers. I also notice you are only 31, which is great. Being that young, even if you have a high FSH, you are likely to have very good quality eggs. High FSH just means you will respond more poorly to the medicine, but what you end up with will likely be of good quality (there is older stuff on the internet saying differently, but everything more updated indicates that your eggs will be just as good chromosomally speaking as someone who does not have high FSH). So, you just need a good RE with a good lab after the thyroid issue.

Thanks again - success mentioned

Thanks again houston.

The GP has advised to hold off on seeing a specialist until after my thyroid is sorted out. Disappointing but not unexpected. The hardest thing is just waiting - still 1 week until my thyroid appointment, then likely book in for biopsy and wait for results...

Can I ask what if anything you did to fall pregnant?

I'm currently taking pre natal vitamin (elevit), co 10 enzyme 150mg per day, krill oil for omega 3, 1000mg per day.

I've seen a few other supplements mentioned online but I am hesitant to try them. I actually brought some maca (and tried it once) then read that it only lowers fsh in menopausal women and in pre menopausal women it can actually increase it!

Pregnancy mentioned

I understand that this post is quite old, however I wanted to post an update for other women like me, who read all the posts available after getting the shock of their lives with the high FSH diagnosis.

My thyroid ended up being fine and in addition to the supplements mentioned above I began weekly acupuncture sessions. Acupuncturist said she wasn't concerned with my FSH and she thought my low iron was more of a problem (I was at the low end but within the normal range). She proscribed liquid iron and I had some Chinese herbs (Wu tan something - twice a day and it tasted vile). Anyway, first month in I fell pregnant naturally! It's still early days but 14 weeks now and all testing/ultrasounds have been perfect.

I know everyone starts this from a different point, and some of you strong woman have had an amazingly hard journey so far, however I wanted to give hope to woman who are needlessly scared when really, FSH isn't the be all end all.

One thing I was focused on, was egg quality. I read the book 'it all starts with the egg' which was wonderful, and really thought that if I only had a few of these left I wanted them to be the absolute best quality possible.
