South Eastern Trains

I know the south-east is near Europe but that shouldn't mean South Eastern Trains' new website needs to mix km with miles.

This is what's said on the home page: "South Eastern runs train services ... covering 773 km of track"

I think it's closer to 480 miles, but that's just me.

There is a feedback section on the left-hand menu bar; let's use it.

errr... assuming you are British then I think you will know what the average southeasterner would say when asked the question "Are you British or European?". Count how many say "both"!!!

Steve,

Sir Ranulph Fines recently ran seven marathons in seven continents in seven days. All right, the run in Antartica might be a fudge, the run in Europe was done in London and was definitely not a fudge. Therefore I deduce London is in Europe.

Also, don't the English (and Welsh!) sports teams regularly compete for the European Cup?

Isn't the United Kingdom a member of the European Union and of the Council of EUrope.

Need I go on?

Hear, hear.

As for SteveH's defence, since when does public opinion change facts?

the last line should have read:

"As for SteveH's defence, since when does public opinion matter?"

No; if the public were to say that the UK is in Africa, it doesn't make it true.

The U.K. is associated with Europe GEOGRAPHICALLY.

It is precisely because of all the idiotic rules and regulations pouring out of Continental Europe that the average British person is turning more and more to the notion that we should not be part of Europe from a POLICTICAL standpoint.

A geographical knowledge poll at my high school a few years ago showed that many students thought New Zealand was in Europe.
Just thought you may like to know.

Bud,

The Brussels bureaucrats are probably figuring out ways to get NZ into the EU as we speak!

Just to show balance, you'll find many people over here who have no idea about North American geography either:- Los Angeles is a state, Florida is on the West Coast, Chicago is right next door to New York, and Idaho can't exist because they've never heard of it!

Astonishingly, these are often the same people who complain about "Ignorant Americans who don't know where London is."

GB v Europe

re (anonymous): "errr.. assuming you are talking about the south-east of England, I think you will find it is actually IN Europe".

There was a golfing tournament last week. It was:

Great Britain and Ireland v. Europe.

I think Great Britain and Ireland won, as it goes

On the other hand there is an annual golf tournament - Europe vs USA. There are usually some British players in the Europe team.
