The anti-metric cynic (or perhaps I'm being unkind in not allowing said person a sense of humour) makes a complelling case for a single rational system of measures in which things are much simpler.
No more confusion just plain good old metric where there are 1000 g to a kg, 1000 m to a km ...

I've not noticed it - although I've noticed the over-massive preference for imperial in their stores (you know, the place where you actually 'go' and not find prunella scales harping on about computers for schools).
To be honest, if I did see the advert and even noticed the very thing you've been eagle-eyed to stay-in and watch, I suspect it'd be right there on the bottom of my priority list, like the train numbers written on the side of the locomotives at my local station.
Now what I mean, "anonymous" ?
Hmm?

Maybe the Tesco ad finally got to him.
Recommend an extra 568 ml of cider this evening, for medicinal purposes.

In Australia we use a nice rounded 600 mL. The UK should do the same.

You can claim it isn't by ignoring the thousands of products with rounded metric sizing and metric only labels and finding one that has imperial and claim the store is not metric.
You can close your eyes as you walk pass the deli counter so you don't have to see the metric only scales weighing out your request in kilograms. This way you can claim the store isn't metric.
You can look away when the cashier's scale displays in kilograms and then promptly crumple your receipt so you can't see all the metric products you purchased and then claim the store isn't metric.
The trick is to ignore it as much as possible so you can claim it doesn't exist.

Euric/Carlyle/etc forgot to tell us that some Australian pubs do pints (ie 20oz).
In fact there are different sizes all over Australia, some metric some imperial.
A case of "closing ones eyes"/ "Pretending"?
Surely not!

FACT/TRUTH: Most (almost all) Irish independant deli's, butchers, green grocers, market stalls use imperial.
FACT/TRUTH: Tesco UK promotes the use of imperial.
FICTION/LIES: Well, simply read any of euric/carly's posts!

In Australia, the pint was changed to 600 mL for pre-packaged products. In pubs and bars, the pint is just a name one uses when one wants beer in a glass. The size of the "pint" varies from bar to bar, city to city and state to state.
http://thylacine.cse.unsw.edu.au:2001/beer/misc/
In the example above, the pint only is referred to in two states and is equal to 425 mL.
Here you see the glass sizes in rounded millilitres and the approximate ounces given. The millilitres reflect the actual size of the glass. Note that the pint term is lost among the countless other terms used for sizing beer. In the chart, pint appears 6 times and in 3 of those instances it is equal to 425 mL, about 150 mL less then the 475 mL pint glass of the other 3.
The next time someone says pint to you, make sure you ask how many millilitres that is, as it is the only way for you to know what the word pint means.

So much for metric standardisatin then.
And carlyle, there is only one Imperial pint. As I have stated before when you said all this last time, the fact that the Aussies have manglrd the system is nothing to do with Imperial. The Imperial pint is 20 ounces of water, 568 millilitres (approx.). The fact that in Australia you have totaly bastardised the thing is completely irrelevent. It is another case of metric causing problems where before there were none.

So much for metric standardisatin then.
The products mentioned are "metric" standardised. When manufacturers of drinking glasses make a series of glasses to the same sizes, such as 425 mL, they are standardised. They are also standardised to metric if the glass is sold as being a certain sized metric glass, this example being 425 mL.
And carlyle, there is only one Imperial pint. As I have stated before when you said all this last time, the fact that the Aussies have manglrd the system is nothing to do with Imperial. There may be one imperial pint, but there are many pints. SI is a legal system in all countries and the SI units are protected by treaties and laws. No government or law can change the set value of an SI unit. Thus, SI units are constant, consistant and coherant everywhere.
No such provision exits for non-SI units. Most countries do not afford them legal status, including Australia. Thus it is legal, and done quite often, to have old unit names recycled to mean different things. This has absolutely nothing to do with standardisation or mangling. When a unit has no legal status and the unit is not considered part of a legal "system", then everyone is free to treat the units or term any way they choose without legal recourse. As a result the unit names of some former imperial units have been recycled with different meanings.
You may think it has nothing to do with imperial but it indirectly adds confusion to what you call imperial. When an old unit name is recycled to mean something different then it means somewhere else or what it once meant adds confusion and makes the unit unclear as to its meaning.
Metric is not the problem here and you are ignorant to say so. The bastardisation of imperial occurs strictly from its status no longer being legal. Without the protection of law any unit or unit collection can become mangled. That is why countries have WMAs and measurements are encoded in law.

Most of that was gibberish, but let me ask you this: if the problem is that Imperial is no longer protected and supported, then why is it no longer protected and supported?
ANS: it is because of metrication.

but let me ask you this: if the problem is that Imperial is no longer protected and supported, then why is it no longer protected and supported?

Wrong again!
It is because industry and government see no reason to have two legal systems that cost money and create confusion. One is sufficient and the best one is chosen to be the supported one. If you chose to continue to use imperial or whatever name it may now be known by (like FFU for Fred Flintstone Units) then you assume all the risks involved.
Enjoy!!!

metre:
To use your usually favourite, but always misplaced word gibberish, if anyone spouts it look at your biased and tedious repeats of nonsense. How often have you been told and shown the fact that Australia, New Zealand and many other nations adopted the metric system democratically. Take your useless imperial glasses off and look at existing reality, you may see a different world.

There *is* a 20oz pint in Australia, just like the kids on the surf use imperial boards. Sorry mate.
