Monsieur Chauvin

December 9 2004 at 5:26 PM
Tony Bennett

One for xcole, this, culled from a missive received recently...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I think my word 'Eurochauvinist' is better than Eurozealot. Many people are pretty thick and probably do not know what a zealot is!! But calling someone a chauvinist is instantly understood by everyone and is guaranteed to arouse the hostility of the female population for starters. I think it is fair for us to use provocative terms for our opponents. After all they have no trouble about using insulting words to describe us.

"In addition, the proponents of EU integration truly are chauvinists. The word Chauvinist comes from France and from a chap called Nicholas Chauvin. Chauvin lived at the time of Napoleon and was a fanatical supporter of Napoleon and all his work. Well, the point about EU integration is that quite a bit of it is Napoleonic in nature. We have metrication due to the EU. The metric system is a system of measurements devised by Napoleon's scientists. The metric system is now being imposed on the British people by use of the criminal law. Chauvin would be delighted. Also, due to EU integration we have a situation where the English Common Law is being swept away.

"It is being replaced by an all embracing Napoleonic system of law. So, yes it can be said that the proponents of EU integration are Chauvin-ist. Chauvin himself would be proud of them!!

Chauvin-ism?

Sounds more like ma-Carlyle-ism (geddit?) and equally as doomed (eventually!)

I love it when anti-metrics score an own goal.

Time was when so called imperial measures were imposed on Britain using the same legal precedence.

And still are today. The pint in the pub has the weight of criminal law behind it too. It is a criminal offence to serve a half litre of beer.

Oh yes I can just hear the protests. "But we want the beloved pint!!"

Maybe, but in the absence of liberation how can you tell? I'd wager that if the half-litre (litres generally) were legalised they'd be plenty of publcans willing to give it a try.

One minor difference - those measures were (in modern history and calibration) born here.

I have no problem with pubs selling half-litres if they found a market for it - i guess it would be confusing though since the glass would be of roughly the same size.

Hey! Its working fine as it is with no complaints - so why change it?

SteveH: "One minor difference - those measures were (in modern history and calibration) born here."

Stan: So what. I thought you BWMA types were strong on democracy and freedom to choose.

Ok I get it. As long as it is the units you want.

SteveH: "I have no problem with pubs selling half-litres if they found a market for it - i guess it would be confusing though since the glass would be of roughly the same size."

Stan: I have to admit that I wouldn't relish the pint along-side the half-litre. I merely point out that there is such a thing as compulsory imperial. Something conveniently ignored on this forum.

SteveH: "Hey! Its working fine as it is with no complaints - so why change it?"

Stan: The answer to that is deeper. It has to do with the sensibility of a single system of measures rather than the prevailing mess.

SteveH: If you read my entire post you can see thats exactly how I feel

Stan: Ok I get it. As long as it is the units you want.

SteveH: Does that mean I must force myself not to use the millimetre - a unit I always use for small measure? How bizzare.

Stan: I have to admit that I wouldn't relish the pint along-side the half-litre. I merely point out that there is such a thing as compulsory imperial. Something conveniently ignored on this forum.

SteveH: Its been brought up a few times actually - especially in the main website where BWMA campaigned for a certain Austrian theme pub in the UK to be allowed to sell litre austrian beer

Carlyle: No they didn't

SteveH: Shut up Carlyle - here, take this mallet and go play in the corner with it.

SteveH: "Hey! Its working fine as it is with no complaints - so why change it?"

Stan: The answer to that is deeper. It has to do with the sensibility of a single system of measures rather than the prevailing mess.

SteveH: Don't get hoodwinked by stupid stuff that UKMA come out with - go and ask the average man on the street if he's noticed some sort of "prevailing mess". You'll be shocked and surprised. Probably

Why not have three sizes:

500 mL (small); 750 mL; (medium) and 1 L (large)? The sizes would be distinguishable one from the other and offer a nice range of sizes.

Bryan - you just reminded me of what Carlyle(Amertica) has to say all day long - "Do you want fries with that, sir?"
