What a joke!

Peter O'Neill has been elected for the third time as Papua New Guinea's prime minister in an uncontested vote in parliament.

Mr O'Neill won the vote 56 to zero after being nominated by his deputy Belden Namah.

Acting speaker Francis Marus initially tried to stop the vote, telling the chamber neither Mr O'Neill nor former leader Sir Michael Somare could stand because they had been at the root of a political crisis that has gripped the nation.
He said Mr O'Neill and Sir Michael were "part and parcel" of the crisis that had endured since August 2 last year.

"The chair will not recognise them as candidates," he said.

"The chair will stop this once and for all."

But Mr Namah moved a motion of dissent, and the acting speaker relented.

Mr O'Neill will now head to government house where acting governor general Jeffery Nape is expected to swear him in.

Swearing in of PNG PM hits snag

May 30 2012, 3:38 PM

THE swearing-in of Peter O'Neill as Papua New Guinea's prime minister has hit a snag, with acting governor-general Jeffery Nape unexpectedly suspending the ceremony.

Mr O'Neill was elected unopposed by parliament this morning to be the nation's prime minister for the third time in 10 months.

However, his swearing-in at Government House was put on unexpected hold by Mr Nape.

"I will study the documents and then conduct the ceremony," he said.

"The swearing-in is suspended."

Mr Nape then left.

A clearly stunned Mr O'Neill asked if he should wait or come back at a future date.

MPs are now locked in furious negotiations at Government House.

Mr Nape was PNG's parliamentary speaker until Governor-General Michael Ogio left the country for London on Monday.

He has advocated delaying the national election, something Mr O'Neill says he cannot do.

Mr O'Neill won Wednesday's parliamentary vote 56 to zero after being nominated by his deputy Belden Namah.

Acting speaker Francis Marus initially tried to stop the vote, telling the chamber neither Sir Michael Somare nor Mr O'Neill could stand because they had been at the root of the political crisis that has gripped the nation.

Mr Namah moved a motion of dissent, and the acting speaker relented.

All acts after Parliament rises illegal and unconstitutional. As it is now. PNG laws are only for small people and not MPs.

Sorry state PNG

Yep Nape is holding the country to RANSOM for his own personal gains.
This is his way of holding his hand out for a golden handshake. His political career is over and wont be back after 2012 elections.

I've never seen a more conspicuously corrupt speaker in PNG's entire history. He has totally destroyed the position of speaker and made PNG into a total laughingstock.

Namah thanks us for not taking to the streets as people in other countries would do

May 31 2012, 10:59 AM

Deputy Prime Minister Belden Namah also commended every one for the part they had played, especially the people of Papua New Guinea "displaying themselves in a peaceful and calm manner".

The same words could come right out of the mouth of any of the world's leading dictators. No one has trouble with dictators as long as they do nothing to threaten the dictators hold on power.

We PNGs would make excellent citizens for Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe!
