Candidates still campaigning in Kairuku
By TRAVERTZ MABONE
THERE are reports of candidates still campaigning in Kairuku-Hiri which is causing worry among other candidates because of the undue influence they may have at the last minute with voters at polling stations.
This was raised by the 2007-2012 member for Kairuku-Hiri Paru Aihi yesterday who called for fair elections after candidates for the Kairuku Hiri open were sighted campaigning around the polling areas. “We want fair elections and the actions of these candidates are uncalled for,’’ he said.
He called on the security forces on the ground to ensure that candidates must not meddle with people and for the security forces to be alert on people trying to vote twice.
Scrutineers in the Vanapa Brown River area have also raised concerns that a local candidate from the area was bringing in ‘aliens’ to vote. This has raised much concern and disappointment among other candidates including Mr Aihi who has called on the police to check candidates trying to manipulate the system.
Scrutineers there also noted that many residents of Vanapa Brown River did not have their names on the Electoral Roll while people from Port Moresby were reported to have been voting at the polling station there.
