Fighting is still being reported from Papua New Guinea's second largest city Lae, where up to six people have been killed in five days of ethnic clashes.
There has been widespread damage to homes, shops and vehicles, and areas of the city have been declared a "fighting zone" by the Morobe provincial authorities.
Morobe Governor Luther Wenge says his appeals for peace have fallen on deaf ears and he expects the violence to continue for several days.
"I appealed to those involved in the fighting and those who are assisting in the fighting to lay down arms and come to the table for the negotiation of peace," he said.
"But it seems to me that the leaders have not come and I assume the fighting is still continuing." |
