Nurses strike after colleague raped on way to work

ABC News

Nurses at Port Moresby's main hospital in Papua New Guinea have walked off the job after a colleague was raped while on her way to work.

The nurse was one of a number of hospital staffers forced to abandon their mini-bus in a torrential downpour.

The nurses were in a group being driven to the Port Moresby General Hospital for a late shift on Monday night.

Their bus broke down in heavy rain and they decided to walk as a group to a nearby police station for safety.

On their way they were set upon by a local gang, who attacked one of the nurses and dragged her into a nearby market where she was raped.

Nurses have issued hospital management with a log of demands, including more secure transport and an increase in risk allowances.

They have walked off the job for 48 hours while they wait for a response.
