PNG minister gun charge dropped: prosecutor's mysterious 'high blood pressure'

Gun charges against PNG's tourism minister were dismissed today after the police prosecutor mysteriously developed "high blood pressure" and failed to appear at the trial.

MP Alois Kingsley was suspended from office last month after police charged him for allegedly holding a gun to the head of a university professor at a rugby match last year.

The alleged victim, University of PNG Professor Kenneth Sumbuk, also failed to turn up, leaving the prosecution's case in disarray.

A stand-in for the police prosecutor told the Boroko District Court that he had been handed the case only this morning by the police prosecutor.

"He came briefly to the office today and informed me he wouldn't be able to make this hearing," the police prosecutor told the court.

"He was diagnosed with high blood pressure for the next three weeks."

He said he needed an adjournment so that he could study the case.

"I am unable to proceed on with this case because I have not been given the opportunity to study the file or interview witnesses."
