Govt proposes major parliamentary law changes

New laws proposed by Papua New Guinea's Government could have a dramatic impact on the operation of the country's Parliament.

A report of a government taskforce has recommended major changes to laws instituted by the former government to try to make PNG's political system more stable.

Among the most significant proposals would be to require a general election if a no-confidence motion against a government succeeds, and preventing independent MPs from joining parties if they do not do it in the first few weeks after being elected.

Both have been key factors in the volatile history of PNG politics.

Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare has won cabinet approval for the draft changes, but he still needs the support of two thirds of the Parliament for the proposals to become law.
