Six paramilitary policemen have laid siege to a Papua New Guinea Government building, ordering officials at gunpoint to pay outstanding election allowances.
The renegades stormed the provincial government headquarters in Wabag, in the remote highlands, and locked public servants into their offices for two hours, the Post-Courier newspaper reported.
The policemen held a senior adviser at gunpoint, demanding that he sign cheques for unpaid allowances stemming from last year's national election.
But the adviser told them he had no funds and referred them to the provincial administrator, Mark Yapao, who also refused to sign the cheques.
It was unclear how the situation was defused but it was understood the renegades returned the office keys two hours later. Sources told AAP that the policemen were owed three months' wages and allowances.
