Catholic Mission is appealing for help to rebuild a substantial part of a Papua New Guinea high school destroyed in a fire last month.
The fire, which took place on Monday 19 April, destroyed the administration block at the Mainohana school, which the De La Salle Brothers established in Bereina diocese in 1946.
Mainohana is a particularly impoverished part of the country, with limited educational opportunities for young people. The Catholic Church has played a major role in providing education services, as the government has not had the resources to do so.
The school is the only Catholic high school in the area. It educates 600 students, from years 9 to 12.
Catholic Mission says the school needs emergency relief so the disruption to the students’ education is minimal.
